‘기쁨’과 ‘행복’의 차이를 아시나요?   

옥스퍼드 영어 사전에서는 기쁨을 “행복이나 만족감에서 발생하는 생생한 즐거움의 감정; 매우 기쁘거나 기뻐하는 느낌이나 상태.” 행복이란 “깊은 즐거움이나 만족감을 느끼거나 보여주는 것입니다. 자신의 상황이나 조건에 대한 만족으로 인해 발생합니다.” 이 두 진술의 유일한 차이점은 행복은 상황이나 조건에 따라 달라지지만 기쁨은 그렇지 않다는 것입니다.

성서에서는 “기쁨”과 “행복”을 정의하기 위해 별도의 단어를 사용합니다. 바울은 사도행전 26:2에서 μακάριος(마카리오스)를 사용하여 아그립바 왕 앞에서 자신을 변호할 세부 사항을 제공하기 위한 기회를 갖게되어 “행복”했다고 묘사합니다. 이 경우 행복이라는 단어는 행운이나 유리한 상황과 연관됩니다.

같은 단어가 마태복음 5장의 “팔복”과 같이 확고한 종교적 의미가 주어졌을 때 “복이 있다”로 번역될 수 있습니다. 같은 맥락에서 “행복”과 “기쁨”의 대조를 보는 것은 흥미롭습니다. 3-11절은 “복을 받다”는 축하의 말을 묘사하고 있습니다. 19세기 초 성서학자 리처드 웨이머스는 ‘복을 입은 사람은 겉으로는 불쌍하지만 더 높은 차원에서 볼 때 부러워하고 축하하고 본받아야 할 사람’이라고 말했습니다. 제자들의 전적인 의존 상태 때문에 그들은 “기뻐”해야 한다고 말합니다(χαίρω chairo 카이로). 다시 말하면, 제자들이 구주이신 예수 그리스도와 교제함으로 인해 기쁨을 누릴 수 있다는 것입니다. 바울은 빌립보 교회에 다시 같은 단어 χαίρω chairo 카이로를 사용했습니다. “주 안에서 항상 기뻐하라. 다시 말하노니 기뻐하라!”(빌립보서 4:4). 박해와 도전과 어려움 속에서도 그리스도인은 주님 안에서의 정체성과 성령의 역사로 인해 “기뻐”할 수 있습니다.

오래전 일입니다. 제 막내 아들이 두 살이었을 때, 그 아이는 다른 아이들처럼 엄마를 찾기보다는 아빠를 찾는 아주 사랑스러운 아들이었습니다. 어느 날 그 아들이 제 앞에서 갑자기 쓰러졌습니다. 병원까지 운전해서 가는 거리는 5마일도 채 안 됐지만 영원처럼 느껴졌습니다. 복잡한 과정이었지만 뇌를 공격한 척추수막염으로 진단되었고 뒤늦게 희망없이 치료가 시작되었습니다. 두 살배기 아기가 죽음의 문턱에 놓여 있을 때, 병상에 누워 무기력한 아이를 지켜보는 아버지로서 저는 기도 외에는 할 수 있는 일이 없었습니다. “아버지, 이 아이의 생명을 살려주십시오. 만일 오늘 이 생명이 주님 앞에 가야한다면 이 무력한 아이 대신 저를 데려가 주십시오.” 처절한 기도의 시간이었습니다. 그러한 어두운 중환자실에서 나는 상상할수 없는 압도적인 기쁨을 경험했습니다. 인간의 감정을 과학적인 방법으로 설명하거나 기술하는 것은 불가능했습니다. 그러나 나와 내 아들의 생명이 주님께 속해 있음을 아는 것도, 주님의 이름을 부를 수 있는 것도, 그리고 주님으로부터 오는 기쁨을 경험할 수 있는 모든 것이 하나님의 자비였습니다.

행복은 상황에 따라 왔다가 순식에 없어질 수도 있습니다. 그러나 주님이 주시는 기쁨은 상황과 환경, 시간에 관계없이 그분의 백성에게서 빼앗길 수 없습니다. 이는 예수 그리스도의 제자들의 속성이자 그분의 약속의 증거입니다. 예수께서는 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “나는 너희를 고아처럼 버려두지 않을 것이다. 내가 너희에게로 가리라”(요한복음 15:18). 신자의 삶에 성령이 내주하심은 인간의 경험과 논리를 초월하는 기쁨의 형태로 나타납니다. 우리 주님은 “내가 아버지께 구하겠으니 그가 또 다른 보혜사를 주사 너희와 영원히 함께 있게 하시리라”(요한복음 14:16)고 약속하셨습니다.

그러므로 그리스도인들은 주님 안에서 항상 기뻐하여야 합니다. 그리스도인들은 하나님의 은혜를 받은 자이며, 우리는 우리 죄 사함을 위해 독생자를 아끼지 않으시고 십자가에 죽으신 위대하신 하나님을 섬기고 있습니다. 우리는 주님과 함께하는 영생에 대한 큰 소망을 가지고 있습니다! 이보다 더 커다란 기쁨의 조건이 있을 수 있을까요? “주안에서 기뻐하라. 다시 말하나니 항상 기뻐하라! (빌 4:4).

Do you know the difference between “joy” and “happy”?

The Oxford English Dictionary defines Joy as “a vivid emotion of pleasure arising from a sense of well-being or satisfaction; the feeling or state of being highly pleased or delighted.” Happy is “feeling or showing a deep sense of pleasure or contentment, esp. arising from satisfaction with one’s circumstances or condition.” The only difference in these statements is that happiness depends on circumstance or condition, while joy does not.

The Bible uses separate words to define “happy” and “joy.”

Paul uses μακάριος (Makarios) in Acts 26:2 to describe him being “happy” to provide details for his defense before King Agrippa. In this instance, the word happy is associated with fortunate or favorable circumstances.

The same word can be translated into “blessed” when given a solid religious sense, such as “Beatitude” in Matthew 5. It is exciting to see the contrast between “happy” and “joy” in the same context. Verses 3-11 describe congratulatory statements of being “blessed.” Richard Weymouth, the early 19th-century biblical scholar, said, ‘People who are blessed may outwardly be much to be pitied, but from the higher and therefore truer standpoint they are to be envied, congratulated, and imitated.’ Meanwhile, verse 12 states that because of the state of the disciples’ total dependency, they must “rejoice” χαίρω (chairo). In other words, joy can be commended due to the disciples’ association with their Savior, Jesus Christ. Paul used the same word, χαίρω (chairo), to the church in Philippi to commend them to “Rejoice in the Lord always. Again, I will say, rejoice!” (Philippians 4:4). Amid persecution, challenges, and difficulties, Christians can “rejoice” because of their identity in the Lord and the work of the Holy Spirit.

My youngest son was two years old and was a joy in his father’s eyes. One day, he collapsed in front of me; the drive to the hospital was less than five miles but seemed like an eternity. It was a complicated process but diagnosed as spinal meningitis that attacked the brain. A two-year-old baby was on the verge of death. As the father watching a helpless child on the hospital bed, I couldn’t do much except pray. “Father, please spare his life. If possible, take me instead of this helpless child.” In a dark ICU room, I experienced overwhelming joy. It was impossible to explain or describe human emotion in a scientific way. However, it was a joy from the Lord knowing that our lives, my son and mine, belong to the Lord.

Happiness comes and goes, depending on the circumstances. However, joy from the Lord cannot be taken away from His people regardless of circumstance, environment, and time. It is an attribute of the disciples of Jesus Christ and the proof of His promise; Jesus said, “I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you” (John 15:18). Indwelling of the Holy Spirit in the believer’s life manifests in the form of joy that transcendent beyond the human experience and logic. Our Lord promised, “I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever” (John 14:16).

Therefore, rejoice in the Lord always. You are a recipient of God’s grace, and we serve the great God who did not spare His only Son to die on the cross for the remission of our sins. We have the great hope for the eternal life with the Lord! What more can you expect?
