독립의 의미

운전하는 동안 하나뿐만 아니라 여러 개의 텐트에서 7월 4일을 맞아 다양한 폭죽을 고객들이 구입할 수 있도록 진열한 것을 보았습니다. ‘하나 사면 네 개 무료’라는 표지가 즐거움으로 가득한 폭죽, 피크닉, 바비큐의 전통을 떠올리게 하여 미소가 지어졌습니다. 저도 그렇지만, 수백만 명의 미국인들이 미국의 독립기념일을 축하하며 나라의 시작을 기념하는 것은 오랜 전통입니다. 이것은 현대적인 맥락에서 ‘독립’의 의미를 생각하게 했습니다.

사전은 독립을 “독립된 상태 또는 외부의 통제나 지원으로부터의 자유”라고 정의합니다. 역사적으로 미국 식민지는 영국 제국의 엄격한 통제 아래 있었으며, 영국 왕 조지 3세와 의회는 무거운 세금과 한계를 부과했습니다. 이 억압적인 조치를 거부한 식민지와 영국 당국의 권위가 점점 커지면서 마침내 독립 선언이 이루어졌습니다. 건국의 아버지들은 ‘독립 선언서’에서 그 이유를 분명히 밝혔습니다. “우리는 모든 사람이 평등하게 창조되었으며, 그들이 창조주로부터 부여받은 특정 양도할 수 없는 권리가 있으며, 그중에는 생명, 자유, 그리고 행복 추구가 포함된다는 진리를 자명한 것이라고 믿는다.” 하나님께서 주신 권리가 위협받을 때 정부의 방향을 바꾸는 것은 불가피했습니다. 따라서 미국의 독립 추구는 영국의 통제로부터의 정당한 자유 추구였습니다.

미국의 독립을 기념하면서 ‘그리스도인의 영적 여정’에서 자유의 의미를 되새기고자 합니다. 참된 자유는 철학이나 개념이 아닌, 진리 그 자체에 있습니다. 그 진리는 바로 예수 그리스도입니다. 다윗 왕은 하나님이 그의 목자시며 그를 보호하고 지탱하며 의의 길로 인도하신다고 고백했습니다. 다윗이 하나님을 목자로 인정함은 독립을 거부한 것이 아니라, 하나님의 은혜를 받는 자로서 참된 ‘독립’을 이해한 것이었습니다. 주님은 우리에게 죄와 죽음으로부터의 자유를 보장해 주십니다. 하나님은 우리를 창조하시고, 그분을 알고 그분의 뜻을 기뻐하도록 하셨습니다. 이것이 예수 그리스도께서 “내가 곧 길이요 진리요 생명이니, 나를 통하지 않고는 아버지께로 올 자가 없느니라”(요14:6)라고 선언하신 이유입니다. 참된 자유는 생명으로 인도하며, 예수 그리스도는 아버지께로 가는 유일한 길이자 생명을 보장해 주십니다.

2024년 독립 기념일을 맞아 바비큐와 불꽃놀이를 즐기면서 참된 ‘독립’의 의미를 되새기며, 우리에게 죄와 파멸로부터 자유를 주시는 주님을 잊지 않고 상기하기 위해 시편 23편을 낭송해봅니다.

“여호와는 나의 목자시니 내게 부족함이 없으리로다. 그가 나를 푸른 초장에 누이시며 쉴 만한 물가로 인도하시는도다. 내 영혼을 소생시키시고 자기 이름을 위하여 의의 길로 인도하시는도다. 내가 사망의 음침한 골짜기로 다닐지라도 해를 두려워하지 아니할 것은 주께서 나와 함께 하심이라. 주의 지팡이와 막대기가 나를 안위하시나이다. 주께서 내 원수의 목전에서 내게 상을 차려주시고 기름을 내 머리에 부으셨으니 내 잔이 넘치나이다. 내 평생에 선하심과 인자하심이 반드시 나를 따르리니 내가 여호와의 집에 영원히 살리로다.”

결론적으로, 우리는 독립기념일의 역사적 중요성을 기념하면서도 주님께서 우리에게 주신 영적 자유를 기억하고 축하해야 합니다. 이러한 이중 기념은 참된 독립에 대한 우리의 이해와 감사를 더욱 풍부하게 할 것입니다.

Title: Meaning of Independence

As I drove to the market, I noticed not just one, but multiple tents showcasing a dazzling array of fireworks, enticing customers to make purchases for the upcoming 4th of July. Signs proudly proclaimed, “Buy one, get four free,” evoking memories of joyous traditions filled with fireworks, picnics, and barbecues. These thoughts brought a smile to my face. Like millions of Americans, it has been a long-standing tradition of mine to celebrate America’s Independence on the 4th of July, commemorating our nation’s birth. This led me to reflect on the deeper meaning of “independence” in the modern context.

The dictionary defines independence as “the quality or state of being independent or freedom from outside control or support.” Historically, the American colonies were under the tight control of the British Empire, with King George III and Parliament imposing heavy taxes and restrictions. The colonies’ rejection of these oppressive measures, combined with the cumulative imposition of British authority, eventually led to the declaration of independence. The Founding Fathers articulated their reasons in the “Declaration of Independence,” stating, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.” It was inevitable to alter the course of government when God-given rights were threatened. Thus, America’s quest for independence was a just pursuit of freedom from British control.

As we celebrate America’s Independence, it is important to reflect on the Christian understanding of freedom within a spiritual context. Real freedom is found in the Truth, which is not merely a philosophy or concept, but a person—Jesus Christ. In his confession, King David declared that God is his Shepherd, who protects, sustains, and leads him on the path of righteousness. David’s acknowledgment of God as his Shepherd was not a refusal of independence but an understanding of true “Independence” as a recipient of God’s grace. The Lord guarantees our freedom: freedom from sin and death. God created us and willed for us to know Him and enjoy His will. This is why Jesus Christ declared, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6). True freedom leads to life, and Jesus Christ is the only way to the Father, who guarantees that life.

As we celebrate Independence Day in 2024, enjoying barbecues and fireworks, we should also take a moment to recite Psalm 23 to remind ourselves of the true meaning of “Independence” and to honor the Lord, who grants us freedom from sin and destruction.

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters.

He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

In conclusion, while we celebrate the historical significance of Independence Day, let us also remember and celebrate the spiritual freedom granted to us by our Lord. This dual celebration will enrich our understanding and appreciation of true independence.
