사랑의 메시지

1943년 2월 3일, 904명의 생명과 수많은 이들의 삶을 영원히 바꾼 사건이 발생했습니다. 이른 아침, 미 육군 수송선 도처스터(Dorchester)는 그린란드로 향하던 중 독일 잠수함 U-223의 기습을 받았습니다. 어뢰가 북대서양 뉴펀들랜드 근처에서 선체를 강타했고, 극심한 추위와 심각한 구명조끼 부족으로 인해 많은 사람들이 생존하기 어려운 상황에 처했습니다. 배 안에서는 혼란이 가중되었고, 병사들은 필사적으로 탈출을 시도했으며, 얼어붙는 바닷물 속에서 점점 희망을 잃어갔습니다.

이 배에는 서로 다른 종교 전통을 가진 네 명의 군목이 타고 있었습니다: 개혁 유대교의 알렉산더 구드(Alexander Goode) 랍비, 감리교의 조지 L. 폭스(George L. Fox) 목사, 가톨릭의 존 P. 워싱턴(John P. Washington) 신부, 그리고 회중교의 클락 V. 폴링(Clark V. 발렌타인데이가 다가오면 매장에서는 사랑을 표현하는 선물들로 가득 찹니다. 그러나 진정한 사랑은 희생을 통해 가장 잘 드러납니다. 우리가 사랑을 찾고자 할 때, 예수 그리스도의 가르침을 깊이 묵상할 필요가 있습니다. 예수님은 제자들에게 “서로 사랑하라. 사람이 친구를 위하여 자기 목숨을 버리면 이보다 더 큰 사랑이 없나니”(요 15:13)라고 명하셨습니다. 예수님은 단순히 사랑을 가르치신 것이 아니라, 자신의 생명을 내어주심으로써 그 사랑을 온전히 실천하셨습니다. 이러한 예수님의 삶은 우리가 사랑을 말로만 하는 것이 아니라, 행동으로 실천해야 한다는 사실을 일깨워 줍니다.

이기심이 만연한 세상에서 성경은 우리에게 합당한 삶을 살라고 가르칩니다(엡 4:1-2). 이는 겸손과 온유, 인내와 사랑으로 서로를 섬기는 삶을 의미합니다. 네 군목의 이야기는 믿음이 진정한 봉사와 희생을 통해 나타난다는 것을 강력하게 상기시켜 줍니다. 당신은 누군가를 위해 자신의 편안함을 포기할 수 있습니까? 위험에 처한 사람을 위해 자신의 구명조끼를 내어줄 수 있습니까? 이러한 질문은 단순한 이론이 아니라 우리의 신앙과 사랑이 얼마나 깊은지를 성찰하게 합니다. 만약 모든 그리스도인들이 예수 그리스도의 가르침을 온전히 믿고 실천한다면, 우리는 이 세상에서 진정한 부흥을 목격하게 될 것입니다. 사랑과 자비가 이기심과 분열을 초월하는 세상을 꿈꿔볼 수 있을 것입니다.

네 군목의 영웅적인 희생을 기리기 위해, 미 의회는 1960년 7월 14일 ‘네 군목 메달(Four Chaplains’ Medal)’을 제정하였으며, 이 상은 오직 이들에게만 수여되었습니다. 또한 1988년, 미 상원은 2월 3일을 ‘네 군목의 날(Four Chaplains Day)’로 지정하여 그들의 신앙과 희생, 단결의 유산이 영원히 기억되도록 하였습니다. 이들의 이야기는 오늘날까지도 많은 사람들에게 깊은 감동을 주며, 진정한 영웅이란 개인의 영광이 아닌 타인을 위한 희생에서 비롯된다는 사실을 여러 세대에 걸쳐 일깨워 줍니다.

On February 3, 1943, an event unfolded that changed the lives of 904 men and countless others forever. In the early morning hours, the U.S. Army transport ship Dorchester was en route to Greenland when it was ambushed by the German submarine U-223. A torpedo struck the vessel near Newfoundland in the frigid waters of the North Atlantic. The freezing temperatures and a critical shortage of life jackets made survival nearly impossible for many on board. The chaos that ensued was unimaginable—men scrambling for safety, the ship rapidly taking on water, and the biting cold rendering many helpless.

Among the passengers were four military chaplains from different faith traditions: Rabbi Alexander Goode (Reform Jewish), Reverend George L. Fox (Methodist), Priet John P. Washington (Catholic), and Reverend Clark V. Poling (Congregationalist). These men had come from diverse backgrounds, yet they were united by their shared commitment to serving others. As panic spread among the soldiers, the chaplains moved with calm determination, offering words of comfort and hope. They directed frightened men to safety, assisted in the distribution of life jackets, and prayed fervently for those facing their final moments.

In a supreme act of selflessness, the four chaplains realized that there were not enough life jackets for everyone. Without hesitation, they removed their own and handed them to soldiers in need. Survivors later recounted hearing the chaplains’ prayers until the very last moment before the ship disappeared beneath the waves. The four men linked arms and, standing together, continued their prayers as the Dorchester sank into the icy depths. Of the 904 men aboard, only 230 were rescued.

As Valentine’s Day approaches, store aisles are filled with gifts meant to express love and affection. While these tokens of appreciation are valuable, the ultimate expression of love is found in sacrifice. In our pursuit of love, we would do well to reflect on the teachings of Jesus Christ. He commanded His disciples, “Love one another. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” (John 15:13). Jesus not only taught about love but demonstrated it fully by sacrificing His own life on the cross. His example challenges us to consider what it truly means to love others beyond words and gestures—through selfless actions and an unwavering commitment to the well-being of others.

In a world often marked by selfishness, the Bible calls believers to live a life worthy of their calling (Ephesians 4:1-2), one characterized by humility, gentleness, patience, and love. The story of the Four Chaplains serves as a powerful reminder that faith is most evident in acts of service and sacrifice. Would you be willing to give up your comfort for someone in need? Would you surrender your life jacket for another in danger? These are not just theoretical questions; they challenge us to reflect on the depth of our commitment to others. If Christians wholeheartedly embraced the teachings of Christ and put them into practice, we might witness a true revival in our world—a transformation where love and compassion triumph over division and indifference.

Recognizing the heroism of these four chaplains, Congress created the Four Chaplains’ Medal on July 14, 1960—an honor reserved exclusively for them. In 1988, the U.S. Senate established February 3 as Four Chaplains Day, ensuring that their legacy of faith, sacrifice, and unity would never be forgotten. Their story continues to inspire generations, reminding us that true heroism is found not in personal glory but in selfless service to others.
