“온전함에 관하여” 

바나 리서치라는 기독교 여론 조사 단체가 있습니다. 이들이 매년 기독교인들을 대상으로 질문을 하는데 늘 빼놓지 않는 것은 ‘목회자에게 바라는 가장 중요한 것이 무엇인가?’하는 것입니다. 매년 그 질문에 대한 답의 정상을 차지하는 것은 인테그리티(Integrity)라는 말입니다. Integrity에 정확히 해당하는 우리말 단어는 없습니다만, 정직성, 투명성, 도덕성, 온전함을 모두 포함한다고 보면 됩니다. 올해 조사에서도 예외는 아니었는데, 읽으면서 몇 가지 생각해 볼 부분이 눈에 띄어서 나누어 봅니다.

바나 리서치는 ‘목회자는 Integrity에서 신뢰를 잃으면 안 된다’라고 했는데, 그 말을 가만히 생각해 보니 뭔가 그렇게 보이지 않으려고 나 자신을 가리고 꾸며야 한다는 의미를 내포하는 듯해서 썩 좋게 들리지 않았습니다. 사실은 우리가 그렇게 정직하고 투명하고 도덕적이고 온전한 사람이 되어 가야겠지요. 그런데 이게 참 쉬운 일이 아닙니다. 목회자도 그저 부족한 사람일 뿐인데 어떻게 이 모든 것에 실망스럽지 않을 만큼 덕을 갖출 수 있겠습니까? 다만 그런 사람이 되기를 소원하고 노력할 뿐이지요. 그런데 그런 목회자를 너무 높은 잣대로 바라보면 볼수록 목회자는 점점 더 자신을 치장하고 숨기려 들지 않겠나 하는 생각이 들었습니다.

바나 리서치는 Integrity를 얘기하면서 ‘설교는 반드시 자신이 지키고 있는 것을 얘기하고, 동시에 얘기하면 지켜야 한다’고 토를 달았더군요. 이 부분도 생각해 볼 부분이다 싶습니다. 설교는 성경을 통해 하나님이 우리 회중에서 하시는 말씀을 대언하는 것입니다. 따라서 하나님께서 하라 또는 하지 말라고 하실 때 설교자는 당연히 ‘이러지 마십시다’라고 얘기를 하게 됩니다.

그럴 때 가끔은 설교를 하면서 ‘나도 그럴 때가 있는데..’ 싶을 때가 있습니다. 그러면 내가 지키지 못하는 것이니 말하지 말아야 하는가? 아니지요. 그것이 하나님의 말씀이라면 내가 지키지 못하는 것이라도 여전히 말해야 하겠지요. 그럴 때 혹시 저를 잘 아는 어떤 분이 ‘본인도 그러면서…’라고 생각할 수도 있겠다 싶습니다. 하지만 기억해야 하는 것은 성도님들처럼 설교자들도 자신이 준비한 설교를 듣고 회개하고 다짐하고 결단하는 사람이라는 사실입니다. 어떨 때는 설교를 준비할 때도 못 느끼고 있다가 설교를 하는 중에 깨닫는 수도 있는 것 같습니다.

Integrity를 위해서 또 하나 중요한 것은 행동의 일관성이라고 바나 리서치는 얘기했습니다. 하나부터 열까지 일관되게 행동해야 한다는 것인데, 이 점도 참 어렵습니다. 우리는 인격에 여기저기 구멍이 난 존재들이어서 정말 안 그럴 것 같은 사람도 어떤 순간에 딱 맞닥뜨리면 전혀 그 사람답지 않은 행동이 나오는 것을 봅니다. 그건 성숙한 신앙인들에게도 마찬가지인 것 같습니다. 그런데 문제는 그런 모습을 보면서 존경스러운 분이라고 기대했던 사람들이 실망을 하고 ‘그럼 그렇지!’ 하면서 돌아서는 경우가 있다는 사실입니다.

하지만 그럴 때 우리가 기억해야 하는 것은, 그 한 가지를 가지고 그 사람 전체를 깎아 내려서는 안 된다는 것입니다. 세상에 완벽한 사람은 없기에 여전히 그런 부분에 부족한 부분이 있는 것은 사실이지만, 여전히 존경스러운 면이 많은 분임은 틀림이 없다는 것과 그분도 여전히 그 구멍을 메우려고 노력하고 있다는 사실을 기억해야 할 것입니다.

그럼에도 불구하고 지도자에게 Integrity는 정말 중요하다는 생각을 다시 한번 해 봅니다. 소자를 실족하게 하지 말라고 하셨으니(마 18:6), 주님 앞에 설 때까지 사람들을 실망시키지 않고, 하나님께 영광이 되는 삶을 살아가도록 최선을 다해야겠다고 다짐해 봅니다.

THE IMPORTANCE OF INTEGRITY IN PASTORAL LEADERSHIP

Barna Research, a Christian polling organization, conducts an annual survey of Christians, and one of the questions they consistently ask is: “What is the most important quality you seek in a pastor?” Each year, the top response remains the same—Integrity. There is no single word in Korean that perfectly translates Integrity, but it encompasses honesty, transparency, morality, and wholeness. This year’s survey results were no exception, and as I read through the findings, I found several thought-provoking points that I wanted to share.

Barna Research stated that “A pastor must never lose trust when it comes to Integrity.” However, upon reflection, this statement struck me in a peculiar way. It seemed to imply that pastors must always appear trustworthy, which could lead to a tendency to conceal and embellish oneself to maintain that perception. In reality, we should strive to become genuinely honest, transparent, moral, and whole individuals. But this is no easy task. Pastors, too, are merely flawed human beings. How can we possibly possess all these virtues to a degree that never disappoints others? All we can do is earnestly desire to be such individuals and strive toward that goal. Yet, the higher the standards people set for their pastors, the more tempted pastors may be to disguise their flaws and hide their shortcomings. This is a troubling thought.

Barna Research also noted that “A pastor’s preaching must be aligned with what they practice, and once they preach it, they must also live by it.” This is another thought-provoking point. Preaching is the act of proclaiming God’s message to His people through Scripture. Therefore, when God commands us to do or not do something, the preacher naturally exhorts the congregation by saying, “Let us not do this,” or “Let us live in this way.”

At times, while preaching, I find myself thinking, “I struggle with this too…” Should I then refrain from speaking on it just because I have not yet fully mastered it? No, that would not be right. If it is God’s Word, it must be preached, even if I fall short in that area. Some who know me well might think, “But he struggles with this too…” when they hear me preach. However, it is important to remember that just like the congregation, preachers also listen to their own sermons, repent, and commit to transformation. Sometimes, we may not even realize our own shortcomings until we are in the middle of delivering the sermon.

Another key aspect of Integrity, according to Barna Research, is consistency in behavior. They emphasize that a leader’s actions must be consistent across all aspects of their life. This, too, is an incredibly difficult challenge. We are all flawed individuals with gaps and inconsistencies in our character. Even the most seemingly mature believers can, when placed in unexpected situations, react in ways that seem completely out of character. The same applies to seasoned and mature Christians. However, the real issue is that when people see a single moment of inconsistency in someone they once respected, they often become disillusioned and turn away, saying, “I knew it…”

But when this happens, we must remember not to judge an entire person based on a single mistake. There is no perfect person in this world. Even if a leader has weaknesses in certain areas, they still have many admirable qualities, and they are continuously striving to mend the gaps in their character.

Nevertheless, Integrity remains an essential quality in leadership. Jesus warned against causing the little ones to stumble (Matthew 18:6). With this in mind, I once again renew my commitment: Until the day I stand before the Lord, I will strive to live a life that does not disappoint people but instead brings glory to God.
