2023년 남침례교 총회를 다녀와서

2023년 남침례교 대회가 6월 11일부터 14일까지 뉴올리언스에서 열렸습니다. 18,901명이 넘는 사람들이 대회에 참석했고, 12,737명의 대의원(메신저)이 1,400만 회원을 보유한 47,000 이상의 교회 미래 방향을 결정하기 위해 투표했습니다. 이 대회는 지난 30년 동안 남침례교에서 두 번째로 큰 모임이었습니다. 2021년 내슈빌 컨벤션이 대의원 기준으로는 15,726명으로 가장 많았습니다. 최고 대표단은 텍사스에서 1,291명, 루이지애나에서 1,286명, 플로리다에서 1,052명이었습니다.

뉴올리언스의 범죄율은 주민 1,000명당 54.97건으로 미국에서 가장 높지만, 안전사고나 참석자의 비행은 없었습니다. 도심을 재활성화하기 위한 NAMB의 노력인 ‘Serve Tour’는 남침례교의 목적을 강조하기 위해 대회 전 여러 곳에서 개최한 선교 행사로서 290명 이상이 예수님의 복음을 받아들여 구원에 동참했습니다.

많은 의제가 있었습니다. 그러나 세 가지 항목이 참석자와 언론의 관심을 끌었습니다. SBC 회장 선출, 교회 리더십 직분의 정의, 성적 학대 개혁 계획(이니셔티브)입니다. 먼저, 현재 회장인 텍사스주 파머스빌제일침례교회의 목사인 Dr. Barber가 재선되어 두 번째 임기를 맡았습니다. Barber 박사는 7,531표(68.38%), 그의 도전자인 조지아주 Blackshear에 있는 스톤 목사(Emmanuel Baptist Church)가 3,458표(31.4%)로 득표를 얻었습니다.

SBC 메신저들은 Freedom Chruch의 호소(9,984표 중 96.46%)를 거부함으로써 교회 내 성폭력을 용납하지 않겠다는 결의를 보였습니다. About 2023 SBC Convention,

The 2023 Southern Baptist Convention was held in New Orleans from 11-14 June. Over 18,901 attended the convention, and 12,737 messengers cast ballots to determine the future direction of over 47,000 churches with 14 million members. This convention was the second-largest gathering of the Southern Baptists in the past three decades. Nashville Convention in 2021 was the largest in terms of messengers, which was 15,726. The highest delegation came from Texas with 1,291 members, Louisiana with 1,286, and Florida with 1,052.

Although there is a high crime rate in New Orleans, 54.97 incidents per 1,000 residents, the highest in the U.S., there were no safety incidents or misbehaviors of attendees. The Serve Tour, NAMB’s effort to revitalize inner cities, garnered over 290 salvation commitments before the convention to emphasize the purpose of the Southern Baptist Convention.

There were many agendas; however, three items drew the attention of attendees and the media: the election of the SBC President, defining the office of the church leadership, and the sexual abuse reform initiative. The current president Dr. Barber, pastor of First Baptist Church in Farmersville, Texas, was reelected to carry out a second term. Dr. Barber received 7,531 votes (68.38%) compared to his challenger Rev. Stone, pastor of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Blackshear, Georgia, with 3,458 votes (31.4%).

The church leadership, especially the office of “pastor,” was revised to include “elder” to identify that SBC churches must “affirm, appoint or employ only men as any kind of pastor or elder as qualified by Scripture.” Thus, the messengers rejected Fern Creek Baptist Church’s (91.85% of 9,700 votes) and Saddle Back Church’s (88.46% of 9,437 votes) requests to revoke the Executive Committee’s recommendation to disassociate them from the SBC due to ordaining or employing female pastors. In his rebuttals, Dr. Albert Mohler, president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and one of the architects of the Baptist Faith and Message 2000, emphasized the doctrinal stands and biblical order of the Southern Baptist. Dr. Mohler said we are facing the most pressing issue; “the bottom-line question of faithfulness. Is the church going to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ-stand by the entirety of biblical truth?” The Bible clearly states that the office of the pastor and elder is exclusively for men only. Thus, Christians must obey the biblical mandate and practice in the local churches.

The sexual reform initiative was overwhelmingly passed in the 2022 convention. The Abuse Reform Implementation Task Force (ARITF) asked for permanent funding and personnel to continue their effort. The ARITF has worked closely with the state conventions to provide resources and training to improve their handling of sexual traumas and prevention. SBC Messengers demonstrated their resolve not to tolerate sexual abuse in the church by rejecting Freedom Chruch’s appeal (96.46% of 9,984 votes). Freedom Church is one of three churches requesting reinstatement into the SBC fellowship. The Executive Committee (EC) deemed not to be in friendly cooperation because “the church failed to cooperate to resolve concerns regarding an abuse allegation.” In their response, Freedom Church denied charges and said, “The matter was investigated and resolved by the Anglican Church of North America (third party investigation).” However, EC did not accept Freedom Church’s response but stands by its decision to exclude the church from the SBC fellowship. EC states, “The pastor admitted to sexual misconduct; however, he is still influencing the church as a leader.” Also, the local Baptist Association and the Florida Baptist Convention have removed Freedom Church. The sexual abuse reform is directly related to the character and qualifications of the pastor and elders. It is a serious matter and must be continued.

Overall, the 2023 SBC Convention was one of the best events in recent years. The messengers heard clearly and expressed their resolve that the SBC is the defender of conservative and biblical truth in the world. I cannot emphasize the importance of participation; it is crucial to be a part of the messenger to express individual church’s concerns and vote on historical events to exercise SBC membership. Each member is a part of the body of Christ (1 Cor 12:27), and every part must carry out an individual’s duty for the whole body. You can’t raise your voice without being a part of a convention.
