성공의 비결 

역사를 통해 많은 지도자들의 자취를 봅니다. 그들의 행적을 통하여 지도자의 영향력은 역사의 흐름을 바꿀 수도 있고 대중에게 혜택을 주거나 다음 세대에 슬픔을 안겨줄 수도 있음을 목격합니다. 그러면 무엇이 훌륭한 지도자의 특징이며, 그들이 행로에서 벗어나 역사에 실패한 지도자로 남게 되는 원인은 무엇입니까? 구약성경에 기록된 아사왕은 경건하고 성공적인 지도자로 시작하였으나 결국 말년에는 실패하는 모습을 보이기에, 그를 통하여 우리는 올바른 지도자의 조건과 무엇이 그를 실족하게 하였는지를 배울 수 있습니다. 

기원전 913년에 아사가 남왕국의 왕이 되었습니다. 이스라엘은 솔로몬 왕 이후에 북왕국 열 지파와 유다와 소수의 벤자민으로 구성된 남왕국으로 나뉘었습니다. 아사는 남왕국의 세 번째 왕이었으며 아마도 그의 아버지의 경건한 영향 때문에 올바른 발걸음으로 통치를 시작했습니다. 아사왕을 묘사하는 두 개의 히브리어 단어가 있습니다. 첫 번째는 Asa가 하나님의 종으로서 적절한 특성을 소유하고 예상되는 기능을 수행했음을 나타내는 ‘좋은’(토브-טוֹב)입니다. 두 번째 단어는 ‘올바르다’(야살-יָשָׁר)로 아사왕이 구부러지지 않은 바른 마음을 지니고 있었음을 나타냅니다. 그는 여호와 앞에서 도덕적으로 순결했습니다(대하 14:2). 아사는 이방 신들의 제단을 제거하고 우상을 헐었으며 그는 “그의 하나님 여호와 보시기에 선하고 정직”(3절)했습니다. 그는 백성들에게 “그 열조의 하나님 여호와를 찾아 율법과 명령을 지켜 행하라”(4절)고 명령함으로써 유다에 부흥을 가져왔습니다. 하나님은 아사의 경건한 리더십의 결과로 평화를 주셨고 유다는 경제적, 정치적 안정과 성장을 경험했습니다. 

구스 사람 제라가 백만 명이 넘는 셀 수 없이 많은 군대를 거느리고 남왕국을 침공했습니다. 아사는 막강한 군사력의 진형을 보고 주님께 간구하며 “강한 자나 약한 자나 다 여호와의 도우심이 필요함이라”(11절)고 고백합니다. 한 나라의 지도자가 하나님을 의지하고 여호와의 이름을 보혜사로 부르면 전쟁이 인간의 싸움이 아닌 하나님이 주관하시는 성전(holy war)이 되어 인간의 상상을 초월하는 결과를 보게 됩니다. 제라와 그의 군대는 “여호와와 그의 군대 앞에서” 완전히 멸망했습니다(13절). 아사와 그의 군대는 적군을 노략하고 국경을 확보했습니다(14~15절).  

지도자의 경건한 성품은 국가나 어떤 주체가 하나님의 은혜를 경험하는 데 반드시 필요한 것임이 분명합니다. 즉, 국민이 지도자를 선택하는 것은 국가의 성공 또는 몰락으로 귀결될 것입니다. 동일한 원칙이 모든 조직이나 심지어 교회에도 적용됩니다. 경건한 목사는 회중을 부흥과 신실한 삶으로 인도하는 반면, 세상적인 목사는 배도와 우상숭배를 초래하게 됩니다. 교인들이 영적인 번영보다 물질적인 성공을 원한다면, 그들은 종종 경건한 성품보다 프로그램 지향적인 세속적인 목회자를 선택하게 되며, 신학적 기초는 덜 중요하게 여깁니다. 실용주의가 도덕적, 성경적 완전성을 능가합니다. 교회와 교파가 하나님의 의를 나타내지 못하는 것이 바로 성도의 영적 성장과 경건보다 물질적, 육체적 성장을 앞세우기 때문입니다. 

여호와 앞에서 겸손한 것이 아사의 성공 열쇠였습니다. 그가 하나님 앞에서 자신을 낮추었을 때 아사는 구원과 승리를 경험했습니다. 이처럼 아사의 리더십이 백성들을 악한 길에서 떠나며 하나님을 통한 평강과 형통을 경험하게 이끌었습니다. 그와 같은 겸손이 우리 신앙 여정에 필요한 것입니다. 교인 각자가 자기를 낮추고 하나님의 뜻과 의를 우선으로 삼는다면 경건한 성품의 목회자를 따를 수밖에 없습니다. 경건한 지도자의 진정한 겸손은 회개를 가져오고 회중을 의와 평화의 길로 인도합니다. 목회자를 탓하기 전에 우리 개인의 겸손함과 경건을 돌아봐야 합니다.

The Secret of Success

Leaders come and go; however, the influence of a leader can change the course of history and either benefits the mass or cause grief to the generations.  What are the characteristics of a good leader, and what causes them to stumble from their course?    We can learn greatly from King Asa, who was a godly and successful leader but ultimately failed. 

Asa became the king of the Southern Kingdom in 913 B.C.  Israel was divided into two kingdoms after King Solomon’s reign, ten tribes of the Northern Kingdom and the Southern Kingdom of Judah and Benjamin.  Asa was the third king and began his reign with the right step, perhaps because of his father’s godly influence.   There were two Hebrew words to describe Asa: the first was “good” (טוֹב) that indicates Asa possessed proper characteristics as a servant of God and performed an expected function.  The second word was “right” (יָשָׁר), which denotes that Asa was not crooked; he was morally pure before the Lord (2 Chronicles 14:2).  Asa removed altars of the foreign gods and destroyed idols, and he was “good and right in the eyes of the Lord his God,” (v.3).  He brought revival in Judah by commanding them to “seek the Lord God of their fathers and observe the law and the commandment” (v. 4).  God granted peace as the result of Asa’s godly leadership. Judah experienced economic and political stability and growth. 

With an army of a million men or innumerable soldiers, Zerah the Cushite invaded the Southern Kingdom.  As seeing the battle formation of mighty military power, Asa sought the Lord and confessed that “the strong as well as the weak need the Lord’s help to gain victory” (v. 11).  When the leader of a nation relies on God and invokes the name of the Lord as the Helper, it becomes the holy war and see the result that is beyond the human imagination.  Zerah and his armies were utterly destroyed “before the Lord and His army” (v.13).  Asa and his forces plundered the enemy and secured the border (vv. 14-15).   

The godly character of a leader is a must for the nation, or any entity, to experience the grace of God.  In order words, the people’s choice of their leader will result in either the success or demise of their nation.  The same principle applies to any organization or even to churches.   A godly pastor ushers the congregation to revival and faithful living, while a worldly pastor brings apostasy and idolatry.  If congregation members desire prosperity, they often choose a program-minded worldly pastor, usually an energetic young entrepreneur, over a godly character.  The theological foundation becomes less important than the art of presentation; pragmatism trumps moral and biblical integrity.  You wonder why churches and denominations fail to demonstrate the righteousness of God.   

Humility before the Lord was the key to Asa’s success; when he humbled himself before God, Asa experienced deliverance and victory.  So also, it was God who granted peace and prosperity to Jerusalem as Asa honored God by seeking Him and departing from the wicked ways.  That same humility is what we need in our faith journey.  When each member of the church humbles oneself and seeks the will of God and His righteousness, then there is no way that they choose a secular leader as their pastor but desires a godly character.  True humility of a godly leader brings repentance and reorients congregations to the path to righteousness and peace.
