[시론 時論] 우리는 어떻게 살아야 할까?

우리는 어떻게 살아야 할까? 

최근에 뉴스를 보았습니까? 많은 사람들은 매일의 뉴스가 그들을 우울하고 슬프게 만든다고 말하는데, 그들이 왜 그런 말을 하는지 이해합니다. 오늘의 뉴스에서도 여전히 자연재해, 살인, 마약, 성소수자 문제, 아동 학대 등등의 어두운 소식이 포함되어 있습니다. 우리 모두는 통제할 수 없는 많은 부정적인 뉴스를 보고 목격하면서 무기력함을 느낍니다. 

파괴적인 생각은 기독교계에도 만연해 있습니다. 교회 지도자들은 그들의 비전을 지원하지 않는 것에 대해 회중을 비난하는 반면, 교인들은 교회 지도자들이 리더십이 부족하다고 비난합니다. 우울한 매일의 뉴스와 교회 분열의 공통된 특징은 다름 아닌 그들의 초점입니다. 그들은 영향력이 없는 것에 초점을 맞추고 있습니다. 

바울이 디도에게 보낸 편지는 혼돈의 세상에서 그리스도인, 특히 영적 지도자로서 어떻게 살아야 하는지에 대한 설득력 있는 주제를 제기합니다. 사도 바울은 디도서를 통하여 그리스도인들은 죄를 짓게 하는 요소보다 성령과 동행하게 만드는 이유에 집중해야 한다고 말합니다. 구원을 가져오는 것은 하나님의 은혜요, 우리가 성령의 가르침에 순종할 때 우리를 죄에서 제지하시는 것도 하나님의 은혜입니다. 

“모든 사람에게 구원을 주시는 하나님의 은혜가 나타나 우리를 양육하시되 경건하지 않은 것과 이 세상 정욕을 다 버리고 신중함과 의로움과 경건함으로 이 세상에 살고 복스러운 소망과 우리의 크신 하나님 구주 예수 그리스도의 영광이 나타나심을 기다리게 하셨으니, 그가 우리를 대신하여 자신을 주심은 모든 불법에서 우리를 속량하시고 우리를 깨끗하게 하사 선한 일을 열심히 하는 자기 백성이 되게 하려 하심이라. 너는 이것을 말하고 권면하며 모든 권위로 책망하여 누구에게서든지 업신여김을 받지 말라”(디도서 2:11-15) 

“어떻게 이 시대를 살아갈까?”라는 물음에 성경은 근신함과 의로움과 경건함으로 이 시대를 살아가라고 가르칩니다. 첫째, 정욕과 욕심을 절제하며 근신하며 살아야 합니다. 모든 열정이 합리적이거나 옳은 것은 아닙니다. 너무 많은 사람들이 자신에게 열정이 있고 그것을 위해 목숨을 바칠 것이라고 주장합니다. 바울은 그리스도인들에게 경건하지 않은 것과 세상 정욕을 거부하려는 열정을 길들일 것을 촉구합니다. 당신은 열정이 있습니까? 당신의 열정이 당신을 하나님께 더 가까이 가게 합니까, 아니면 죄를 짓게 합니까? 자신의 행동에 대해 올바른 생각을 가지고 있는지 검토하십시오. 

둘째, 의롭게 살아야 합니다. 옳고 그름을 구별하는 원칙인 도덕의 개념은 다양한 문화에서 다른 의미를 갖고 있습니다. 예를 들어 Tiba Ali는 터키에 거주했으며 부모의 바람과는 다른 미래의 계획을 세웠습니다. 그 결과 2023년 1월 31일 이라크에 있는 가족을 만나러 가던 중 아버지에게 목이 졸려 숨졌습니다. 이른바 ‘명예살인’으로 한 명의 젊은 인생이 22살의 나이에 막을 내린 것입니다. 특정 지역에서는 이러한 일이 범죄가 아닌 타당한 가족의 선택이라고 말하고 이루어지지만, 다른 지구촌 지역에서는 이런 극단적인 조치에 혐오합니다. 세상의 도덕성은 주관적일 수밖에 없으며 객관적인 도덕의 정의란 없습니다. 그러나 그리스도인들에게는 주인의 기준이 우리의 도덕성이 되어야 합니다. 하나님의 은혜는 예수 그리스도를 통하여 우리를 구속하시고, 성령님은 그리스도인들과 함께하시며 우리로 하여금 의의 길을 택하도록 인도하십니다(14절). 

마지막으로 우리는 경건하게 살아야 합니다. 경건이라는 용어는 εὐσεβής(유세베스)에서 파생되었으며 ‘하나님을 경외하는 헌신’을 의미합니다. 쉽게 말하면 그리스도인은 하나님을 믿는 대로 살아야 한다는 것입니다. 하나님은 거룩하시며 우리가 거룩한 삶을 살기를 원하신다면(레 19:2; 엡 1:4; 살전 4:7), 그리고 그것을 믿는다면 믿는 대로 거룩한 삶을 살아야되지 않겠습니까? 주중에는 온갖 욕을 하다가 주일에만 찬송과 성경을 읽는 위선적인 행동은 경건한 삶이 아닙니다.  

아무도 우리를 주님의 이름을 욕되게 하는 일이 없도록 부르심에 합당한 삶을 살아야 합니다. 우리가 그리스도의 재림에 초점을 맞출 때 성령님은 우리가 이 세상에서 근신하고 의롭고 경건하게 살 수 있도록 인도하시고 지키실 것입니다.

How shall we live? 

Have you seen the news lately? Some say that the daily news makes them depressed and sad, and I understand where they come from. Today’s report contains natural disasters, murders, drugs, LGBTQ issues, abuses of children, and more.  We all felt helpless as watching and witnessing much negative news that is out of control.   

The destructive thoughts are rampant in Christian circles as well.  Church leaders blame the congregation for not supporting their vision, while the congregation members accuse their church leaders of lack of leadership.  The common characteristic for both depressive daily news and the division in the churches is no other than their focus; they are fixed on something that is not in their sphere of influence.    

Paul’s letter to Titus raised the compelling topics of how to live as a Christian, especially as a spiritual leader, in a chaotic world.  According to Paul, Christians should focus on what makes them walk with the Holy Spirit instead of what causes them to sin.  It is the grace of God that brings salvation, and it is His grace that restrains us from sin as we are obedient to Holy Spirit’s teaching.  

“For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works. Speak these things, exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no one despise you.”(Titus 2:11-15) 

The Scripture teaches us to live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age.  What does that mean? 

First, we must live soberly to control our passions and desires.  Not all passions are reasonable or warranted.  Too many people claim they have a passion and would give their lives for it.  Paul urges Christians to tame their passion for denying ungodliness and worldly lust.  Do you have a passion?  Is your passion cause you to get closer to God or cause you to sin?  Examine whether you have the right thoughts about your actions.   

Second, we must live righteously.  The concept of morality, the principles to distinguish right from wrong, has different meanings in various cultures. For example, Tiba Ali resided in Turkey and had a different plan for herself against her parent’s wishes.  As a result, she was strangled by her father on January 31, 2023, while visiting her family in Iraq.  The so-called “honor killing” was practiced in a particular part of the world, while others were offended by such extreme measures.  In the world, morality can be subjective.  However, for Christians, our morality should be no other than the Master’s standard.  The grace of God redeems us through Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit indwells in the lives of Christians to convict us to choose the path of righteousness (v. 14).   

Lastly, we must live godly.  The term godly is derived from εὐσεβής(Eusebius) and denotes “God-fearing devotion.” In layman’s terms, Christians should live as they believe in God.  The Scripture says that God is holy and expects us to live a life of holiness(Lev. 19:2; Eph 1:4; 1 Thess 4:7).  

We must live a life worthy of His calling so that no one can accuse us of being a cause of disgrace to the name of our Lord.  As we focus on the return of Christ, the Holy Spirit will enable us to focus on the sober, righteous, and godly living in this world.
