교회의 권징과 6가지 이유  

최근 전국 뉴스에 목회자들에 관한 기사가 눈길을 끌었습니다. 노스 다코다주(North Dakoda)의 Fargo에 있는 한 지역 교회는 Micah Louwagie를 목사로 선택했습니다. 그는 공개적인 트랜스젠더인데 2023년 2월 12일 일요일에 루터교회를 인도하기 위해 목사로 공식 취임했습니다. 또 다른 교단의 ARC(Association of Related Churches in New England) 조슈아 개그넌(Joshua Gagnon) 담임 목사는 괴롭힘과 재정적 위법 행위 혐의가 제기된 지 1년 만에 2023년 2월 12일 사임했습니다. 개그넌 목사는 교회를 사용하여 집을 구입했고, 교회에서 세금이 면제된 대폭 할인된 가격으로 집을 개인 소유로 구입하여 2년 후 매각하였으며 $750,000의 이익을 남겼습니다. 물론 남은 이익금은 교회에 기부한 것이 아니라 자신이 챙긴 것입니다. 

지역 교회나 목회자들의 숱한 사고 속에서 우리에게 사도 바울은 그리스도인의 믿음과 교회의 기초는 예수 그리스도밖에 없음을 상기시켰습니다(고전 3:11). 에베소교회에 보낸 서신에는 하나님께서 “모든 정사와 권세와 능력과 주관하는 자와 이 세상뿐 아니라 오는 세상에 일컫는 모든 이름 위에 뛰어나게 하시고 또 만물을 그 발 아래 복종하게 하시고 그를 만물 위에 교회의 머리로 주셨느니라”라고 하셨습니다(엡 1:22). 그러므로 예수 그리스도는 교회의 머리이고 그리스도인과 지체된 교회는 그리스도께 거룩함으로 복종해야 합니다. 

따라서 교회의 권징은 대중적인 주제가 아니며 강단에서 거의 거론하지도 않지만, 반드시 교회에서 가르쳐야 하고, 시행되어야 하는 중요한 도리입니다. 우리는 그리스도의 몸의 순결을 위해 죄의 결과의 중요성을 이해하고 가르쳐야 합니다. 사도 바울은 고린도 교인들에게 왜 교회에서의 권징이 필요하며 어떠한 사람들과 관계를 끊어야 하는지에 대하여 여섯 가지 원인을 열거했습니다(고전 5:9-13). 

첫째, 성적으로 부도덕한 사람. Πόρνος(포르노스)라는 단어에는 문화적, 역사적 배경의 의미가 담겨 있습니다. 초기 그리스도인들은 “성적 부도덕”을 “불륜”, “매춘”, “부자연스러운 성교”로 이해했습니다. 그러므로 혼외 성관계, 성매매, 동성애 관계에 연루된 사람은 교회에서 징계받아야 하며 기독교인의 교제를 허용해서는 안 됩니다. 

둘째, 탐욕스러운 사람, 자신의 이익을 위해 교회에서 권력이나 영향력을 행사하려는 사람은 징계받아야 합니다. 안타깝게도 너무나 많은 사람이 성경적 원리 없이 감정적인 이유로 자기 의견을 주입하려 하여 교회 내 분열을 조장합니다. 교회 분열의 많은 원인이 되는 탐욕스러운 사람은 교회의 머리 되신 예수님을 경외하는 것이 아니기에 교회의 일부가 되어서는 안 됩니다. 

셋째, 우상과 이방 신들과 그들의 형상을 숭배했던 자들은 가르침을 통해 회개하며, 한 걸음 더 나아가 하나님 외에 다른 어떤 것도 예배의 대상으로 받아들이지 않아야 합니다. 기독교인이 부적을, 그리고 미신을 믿는다면 그들은 그리스도의 지체가 될 수 없으며 교회의 교제에서 제외되어야 합니다. 

넷째, 그리스도를 대적하는 중상모략하는 자는 교회에서 제명되어야 합니다. 그리스어로 Λοίδορος(아오이도로스)는 “모욕”, “비난하다”라는 다시 말하면 공개적으로 주님을 모욕하는 것을 의미합니다. 그러므로 교회의 머리를 모독하는 자를 징계하는 것이 마땅합니다. 그런 사람(들)은 교회에 들어올 수 없습니다. 

다섯째, 습관적으로 술을 많이 마시고 세상의 원리를 택하는 주정뱅이는 결코 예수님의 몸 된 교회의 일원이 될 수 없습니다. 따라서 술을 좋아하고 세상의 쾌락을 쫓는 사람들은 성령으로 충만하지 않으며 교회의 일원이 될 수 없습니다. 

여섯째, 위력으로 남의 것을 강탈하거나 약탈하는 강도와 같은 사람은 하나님의 나라를 유업으로 받을 수 없습니다(6:10). 부의 축적이 부도덕하거나 힘이 없는 자들의 재산을 빼앗아 이룬 것이라면, 그것은 의롭게 바쳐질 수 없다는 것입니다. 하나님께 속한 자들이 교회의 지체로서 하나님의 뜻을 찾고 의를 구하는 것이 기독교인들의 올바른 신앙의 자세입니다. 강도는 주님 몸의 일부가 될 수 없으며 교회의 일부가 될 수 없습니다. 

교회 권징의 목적은 개인이 자신의 죄를 회개하고 주님께 돌이키도록 하는 것임을 기억하십시오. 그것은 회복을 염두에 두고 교회의 순결을 위해(고전 5:6-7) 적절한 과정을 통해 이루어집니다(마 18:15-20). 

불행하게도 많은 세속적인 교회들이 회개하지 않은 죄인들을 기꺼이 공동체에 받아들입니다. 그것도 사랑이라는 핑계로 말입니다. 정의가 포함되지 않은 사랑은 하나님의 사랑이 아닙니다. 다만 불의와 타협하는 물질 만능주의를 교회에 받아들이는 사탄의 앞잡이 역할을 하는 세상의 교회가 된다는 것입니다. 현대 사회에서 교회 권징을 실행하는 것은 어려운 일이지만, 그러나 우리는 타협하지 말고 교회의 기초이시며 머리 되신 예수 그리스도께 지속적으로 집중하며, 우리에게 거룩할 것을 요구하신 우리의 주님의 뜻을 따라 주님의 의로움과 복음의 길을 삶으로 실천하지 않는 자들을 교회에서 권징해야 합니다. 특별히 목사나 교회의 지도자들은 자신의 삶이 주님의 원하시는 거룩한 삶의 모범이 되도록 항시 경계하며 사탄의 유혹에 빠지지 않도록 기도와 말씀으로 무장해야 합니다. 성령님께서 인도하실 때 순종하는 우리가 되기를 기도합니다.

Discipline in the church and six causes of discipline

Recent articles about pastors in the national news caught my attention.  A local church in Fargo, North Dakoda, selected Micah Louwagie as their pastor. He is an openly transgender person and was formally installed as a pastor on Sunday, February 12, 2023, to guide the Lutheran church in the state.  Lead Pastor Joshua Gagnon of the Association of Related Churches in New England (ARC) resigned on February 12, 2023, after a year of an allegation of bullying and financial misconduct.  Gagnon used the church to purchase a house, which he bought at a steep discount from the church and sold two years later and kept a $750,000 profit for himself.   

Amid multiple mishaps by the local churches or pastors, Apostle Paul reminded Christians that the foundation of their faith and church is no other than Jesus Christ (1 Cor 3:11).  It is God who laid the foundation, which is Jesus Christ, our Messiah.  God put all things under the feet of Jesus Christ to govern the church (Eph 1:22).  Therefore, Jesus Christ promised the Helper, the Holy Spirit, to indwell in those who are persons of Christ. Therefore, Christians and the church must be holy as they are subject to Christ (vv. 16-17).  

Thus, discipline in the church is inevitable and must be enforced. It is not a popular subject and seldom heard from the pulpit; however, we must understand and teach the importance of the consequences of sin for the sake of the purity of the body of Christ. Apostle Paul listed six causes for the disassociation with such persons in the First Corinthians (5:9-13):  

1. Sexually immoral person. The word πόρνος has cultural and historical implications. For the early Christians, they understood “sexual immorality” as “infidelity,” “prostitution,” and “unnatural intercourse.” Therefore, anyone involved in a sexual relationship outside of marriage, selling/buying sex, and homosexual relation must be disciplined and should not allow fellowship among Christians. 

2. Covetous person, anyone striving to have power or influence in the church for his gain, should be disciplined. Unfortunately, too many people tried to inject their own opinions based on their emotional reasons without biblical principles, which caused division within the church.  Such a covetous person should not be a part of the church. 

3. Idolater, who worships idols, heathen gods, and their images, must bring to the church for discipline.  One step further, any person who worships other than God should be excluded from the Christian fellowship.   

4. A reviler who calumny against Christ must be disassociated with the Church. Λοίδορος in Greek denotes “insult,” “to reproach,” and “blaspheme” to openly dishonor the Lord. Therefore, it makes sense to discipline anyone who insults the head of the Church.  Such person(s) should not be allowed in the Church.    

5. A drunkard who habitually drinks too much and chooses worldly influence. Thus a drunkard is not filled with the Spirit and shouldn’t be a part of the Church.  

6. An extortion who robs or plunders others with force. Such a person as a robber can not inherit the kingdom of  God (6:10).  A robber cannot be a part of a fellowship with Christians. 

Remember that the purpose of church discipline is to allow individuals to repent of their sins and turn to the Lord. It is done with the proper process (Mat 18:15-20) with restoration in mind and for the purity of the Church (1 Cor 5:6-7).  

Unfortunately, it is challenging to implement church discipline in modern society, where many worldly churches are willing to accept non-repented sinners to their fellowship. Yet, we must not compromise but continually focus on the foundation and the head of the Church, Jesus Christ. He demands us to be holy. 

1 Corinthians 5:9-13 

I wrote to you in my epistle not to keep company with sexually immoral people. Yet I certainly did not mean with the sexually immoral people of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world. But now I have written to you not to keep company with anyone named a brother, who is sexually immoral, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or an extortioner—not even to eat with such a person. 

For what have I to do with judging those also who are outside? Do you not judge those who are inside? But those who are outside God judges. Therefore “put away from yourselves the evil person.” 

Father, You are the Righteous Judge, and judge us with Your justice and compassion. I acknowledge that Your holiness cannot be compromised and must be honored by those who worship You. May the churches honor the head, Christ, by keeping them pure. Help us to resist evil but pursue Your righteousness. I pray in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
