은혜와 책임

은혜(grace)라는 단어는 헬라어 χάρις(charis)에서 유래하였으며, 일반적으로 호의, 선의, 혹은 은총으로 번역된다. 특별히 하나님께서 인류에게 베푸시는 은혜의 문맥에서 이 단어는 자격 없는 자들에게 주시는 하나님의 긍휼과 사랑을 의미한다. 은혜는 단순한 신학적 개념이 아니라, 구원의 기초이자 그리스도인의 삶을 유지하게 하는 능력이다.

성경은 처음부터 끝까지 인간이 하나님의 은혜를 절대적으로 필요로 하는 존재임을 보여준다. 타락한 인간은 자신의 선행이나 종교적 행위, 혹은 도덕적 노력으로 스스로를 구원할 수 없다. 구원은 전적으로 하나님의 역사이다. 사도 바울은 “너희가 그 은혜에 의하여 믿음으로 말미암아 구원을 받았으니 이것은 너희에게서 난 것이 아니요 하나님의 선물이라”(에베소서 2:8)라고 선언하였다. 그러므로 은혜는 단지 그리스도인의 삶으로 들어가는 문이 아니라, 하나님 앞에서 신실하게 살아가도록 붙드시는 능력이다.

사도 바울은 여러 서신에서 하나님께서 성도들에게 주신 세 가지 영적 실재를 반복적으로 강조하였다. 그것은 바로 믿음, 사랑, 그리고 소망이다. 고린도전서 13장에서 바울은 고린도교회 안에 존재하던 영적 은사에 대한 오해와 남용을 바로잡고자 하였다. 어떤 사람들은 예언을 높였고, 또 어떤 사람들은 방언이나 지식을 자랑하였다. 그러나 바울은 그러한 은사들은 결국 사라질 것이라고 가르쳤다. “예언도 폐하고 방언도 그치고 지식도 폐하리라”(고린도전서 13:8). 그러나 모든 일시적인 은사와 업적 가운데서도 끝까지 남는 것이 있는데, 그것이 바로 믿음과 소망과 사랑이다. 그리고 그 가운데 가장 큰 것은 사랑이라고 선언하였다.

그런데 데살로니가전서에서 바울은 이 세 가지 덕목을 더욱 실제적이고 깊이 있게 설명한다. 그는 다음과 같이 기록하였다. “우리가 너희 모두로 말미암아 항상 하나님께 감사하며 기도할 때에 너희를 말함은 너희의 믿음의 역사와 사랑의 수고와 우리 주 예수 그리스도에 대한 소망의 인내를 우리 하나님 아버지 앞에서 끊임없이 기억함이니”(데살로니가전서 1:2-3).

여기서 바울은 믿음, 사랑, 소망 각각에 책임과 실천을 나타내는 표현을 덧붙인다. 믿음에는 역사(work), 사랑에는 수고(labor), 소망에는 인내(patience)가 연결되어 있다. 이는 하나님의 은혜가 결코 수동적이지 않음을 보여준다. 참된 믿음은 행동을 낳고, 참된 사랑은 희생을 요구하며, 성경적 소망은 인내를 만들어낸다. 하나님의 선물은 성도의 마음뿐 아니라 삶 전체를 변화시키도록 주어진 것이다.

첫째, 바울은 “믿음의 역사”를 말한다. 믿음은 하나님께서 주시는 선물이지만 결코 잠들어 있는 상태로 남아 있어서는 안 된다. “역사”라는 말은 활동과 책임, 그리고 목적 있는 행동을 의미한다. 그리스도인은 믿음을 얻기 위해 일하는 것이 아니라, 이미 하나님의 은혜로 믿음을 받았기 때문에 일하는 것이다. 참된 믿음은 반드시 열매를 맺는다.

야고보 역시 “행함이 없는 믿음은 죽은 것이라”(야고보서 2:26)고 가르친다. 진정한 믿음은 사람의 내면을 변화시키고, 그 결과 삶의 방향과 행동을 변화시킨다. 그리스도를 진실로 신뢰하는 사람은 핍박과 고난 속에서도 하나님의 뜻에 따라 살고자 한다. 이러한 믿음은 율법주의나 두려움에서 나오는 것이 아니라 하나님께 대한 감사와 사랑에서 비롯된다.

데살로니가 교회의 성도들은 바로 이러한 모습을 보여주었다. 그들은 핍박과 적대 속에서도 믿음을 굳게 지켰다. 그들의 믿음은 단지 말로만 존재한 것이 아니라 행동으로 나타났다. 그들은 어려움 속에서도 계속해서 그리스도를 증거하였다. 그러므로 믿음의 역사는 하나님을 향한 내적인 신뢰가 외적인 순종과 거룩함, 인내와 충성된 섬김으로 드러나는 것을 의미한다.

둘째, 바울은 “사랑의 수고”를 말한다. 여기서 “수고”라는 단어는 단순한 일이 아니라, 땀 흘리는 노력과 희생, 심지어 탈진할 정도의 헌신을 의미한다. 성경적 사랑은 얕은 감정이나 일시적인 호감이 아니다. 그것은 희생적이며 오래 참고 자신을 내어주는 사랑이다. 타락한 인간은 본성적으로 무조건적인 사랑을 할 수 없다. 세상 곳곳에서 나타나는 잔인함과 폭력, 증오와 이기심은 인간의 죄성을 증명한다. 그러나 예수 그리스도를 통해 성도들은 하나님과 이웃을 사랑할 수 있는 초자연적인 능력을 받게 된다. 이것은 성령께서 우리 안에서 역사하시는 결과이다.

예수님께서는 가장 큰 계명이 하나님 사랑과 이웃 사랑이라고 가르치셨다. 이러한 사랑은 종종 희생을 요구한다. 상처를 받았을 때에도 용서하고, 거절당했을 때에도 긍휼을 베풀며, 어려운 상황 속에서도 사랑하기를 포기하지 않는 것이다. 사도 바울은 자신의 삶과 사역을 통해 이러한 사랑을 몸소 보여주었다. 그는 극심한 핍박 속에서도 계속해서 하나님과 사람들을 사랑하며 섬겼다. “유대인들에게 사십에서 하나 감한 매를 다섯 번 맞았으며 … 또 수고하며 애쓰고 여러 번 자지 못하고 주리며 목마르고 여러 번 굶고 춥고 헐벗었노라”(고린도후서 11:24-27).

바울이 이러한 고난을 견딜 수 있었던 이유는 그리스도의 사랑이 그를 붙들었기 때문이다. 그의 수고는 개인적인 야망이나 세상의 인정 때문이 아니라 하나님께 대한 헌신과 사람들에 대한 사랑 때문이었다. 참된 그리스도인의 사랑은 편안함과 자기중심성을 넘어선다. 그것은 하나님의 나라를 위해 기꺼이 짐을 지고 희생하며 끝까지 인내하는 사랑이다.

셋째, 바울은 “소망의 인내”를 말한다. 성경적 소망은 단순한 낙관주의나 막연한 기대가 아니다. 그것은 예수 그리스도의 사역과 하나님의 약속 위에 세워진 확고한 확신이다. 그리스도인의 소망은 예수님의 탄생과 죽음, 부활, 그리고 다시 오심에 근거한다. 여기서 “인내”는 어려운 상황 속에서도 흔들리지 않고 견디는 것을 의미한다. 성도들은 그리스도 안에 있는 소망 때문에 절망하지 않고 고난을 견딜 수 있다. 소망은 현재의 고난 너머에 있는 영원한 영광을 바라보게 한다.

세상은 고난에서 즉각적인 해방을 원하지만, 성경은 성도들에게 하나님의 뜻을 신뢰하며 끝까지 견디라고 가르친다. 그리스도인들은 현재의 고통과 핍박이 영원하지 않다는 사실을 안다. 또한 예수님께서 보내신 보혜사 성령께서 성도들 안에 거하시며 끝까지 견딜 힘을 주신다. 교회 역사 속에서 수많은 성도들이 핍박과 감옥, 거절과 순교를 견뎌냈다. 그들의 확신은 세상의 안전이나 성공이 아니라 하나님의 영원한 약속 위에 세워져 있었다. 소망의 인내는 상황이 어둡고 힘들지라도 흔들리지 않게 만든다.

그러므로 믿음과 사랑과 소망은 단순한 추상적 개념이 아니다. 그것들은 하나님의 은혜로부터 나오는 살아 있는 능력이다. 믿음은 행동으로 나타나고, 사랑은 수고로 증명되며, 소망은 인내로 드러난다. 이 세 가지는 그리스도 안에서 변화된 삶의 증거이다. 오늘날 교회는 이러한 진리를 다시 회복해야 한다. 기독교는 단순한 교리적 동의나 감정적인 종교 체험이 아니다. 그것은 하나님의 은혜로 변화되고 성령의 능력으로 살아가는 삶이다. 성도들은 순종으로 믿음을 나타내고, 희생으로 사랑을 증명하며, 인내로 소망을 보여주어야 한다.

혼란과 분열, 이기심과 도덕적 타락이 가득한 시대 속에서 그리스도인들은 하나님의 은혜를 증거하는 빛으로 살아야 한다. 세상은 거룩함과 긍휼, 흔들리지 않는 믿음과 소망으로 살아가는 성도들을 필요로 한다. 이러한 삶은 인간의 노력만으로는 불가능하다. 그것은 전적으로 하나님의 은혜가 성령을 통해 우리 안에서 역사하실 때 가능하다. 그러므로 모든 성도들은 하나님께서 주신 이 귀한 선물들을 소중히 여기며, 그에 따르는 책임을 감당해야 한다. 믿음은 의로운 행동으로 나타나야 하며, 사랑은 희생적인 섬김으로 이어져야 하고, 소망은 고난 속에서도 흔들리지 않는 인내로 드러나야 한다. 그럴 때 그리스도의 성품이 성도들의 삶 가운데 나타나게 될 것이다. 하나님의 은혜와 예수 그리스도의 사랑과 성령님의 교통하심이 여러분 모두와 함께하시기를 바란다.

GRACE OF GOD AND CHRISTIANS’ RESPONSIBILITY

Grace is one of the most profound and transformative themes in all of Scripture. The very word “grace” comes from the Greek term χάρις (charis), often translated as favor, goodwill, kindness, or blessing. In the biblical context, grace refers to the unmerited favor of God bestowed upon sinful humanity. It is God’s mercy extended toward those who neither earned nor deserved such divine compassion. Grace is not merely an abstract theological concept; it is the very foundation of salvation and the sustaining power of the Christian life.

From beginning to end, Scripture reveals that humanity stands in desperate need of God’s grace. Fallen mankind cannot redeem itself through good works, religious rituals, or moral achievements. Salvation is entirely the work of God. The Apostle Paul declares, “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God” (Ephesians 2:8). Grace therefore is not only the doorway into the Christian life, but also the strength by which believers continue to walk faithfully before God.

In his letters, the Apostle Paul frequently emphasized three enduring spiritual realities given by God to believers: faith, love, and hope. In 1 Corinthians 13, Paul addressed the misuse and misunderstanding of spiritual gifts within the Corinthian church. Some believers elevated prophecy, others exalted speaking in tongues, while still others prized knowledge and eloquence. Paul reminded them that many gifts would one day cease: “whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away” (1 Corinthians 13:8). Yet amid all temporary gifts and accomplishments, three eternal virtues remain: faith, hope, and love. Of these, Paul declared love to be the greatest.

However, in Paul’s first letter to the Thessalonian believers, these same three virtues are described in a deeper and more practical manner. Paul wrote:

“We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers, remembering without ceasing your work of faith, labor of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ in the sight of our God and Father” (1 Thessalonians 1:2–3).

Here Paul adds descriptive responsibilities to each virtue. Faith is connected to work, love to labor, and hope to patience. These expressions reveal that the grace of God is never passive. Genuine faith produces action. True love requires sacrifice. Biblical hope develops endurance. The gifts of God are meant to shape both the heart and conduct of believers.

First, Paul speaks of the “work of faith.” Faith is a gift from God, but it is never intended to remain dormant. The word “work” implies activity, responsibility, and purposeful action. Christians do not work in order to obtain faith; rather, they work because faith has already been implanted within them by God’s grace. Saving faith inevitably produces visible fruit.

James reinforces this truth when he writes, “Faith without works is dead” (James 2:26). Genuine faith transforms a person from the inside out. It changes desires, priorities, and actions. A believer who truly trusts Christ will seek to live according to God’s will even amid opposition, suffering, or hardship. Such faith is not motivated by legalism or fear, but by gratitude and devotion to God.

The early Christians in Thessalonica demonstrated this reality. Despite persecution and hostility, they remained steadfast in their witness. Their faith was evident not merely in words, but in conduct. They endured difficulties while continuing to proclaim Christ. The work of faith therefore refers to the outward expression of inward trust in God. It is faith made visible through obedience, perseverance, holiness, and faithful service.

Second, Paul speaks of the “labor of love.” Unlike the general term for work, the word “labor” carries the meaning of strenuous effort, sacrifice, and even exhaustion. Biblical love is not shallow emotion or temporary affection. It is costly, enduring, and self-giving.

Humanity in its fallen state is incapable of perfectly loving others unconditionally. The cruelty, hatred, violence, and selfishness seen throughout the world testify to the corruption of the human heart. Yet through Jesus Christ, believers receive the supernatural capacity to love both God and others. This love is the work of the Holy Spirit within the believer.

Jesus Himself taught that the greatest commandments are to love God and to love one’s neighbor. Such love often demands sacrifice. It requires forgiveness when wounded, compassion when rejected, and mercy when wronged. The labor of love calls believers to continue loving even when it is difficult or painful.

The Apostle Paul embodied this truth through his own life and ministry. Despite severe persecution, he continued to serve Christ and care for others. He wrote:

“Five times I received from the Jews forty lashes less one. Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned, three times I was shipwrecked—a night and a day I have spent in the deep. I have been on frequent journeys, in dangers from rivers, dangers from robbers, dangers from my countrymen, dangers from the Gentiles, dangers in the city, dangers in the desolate places, dangers on the sea, dangers among false brothers. I have been in labor and hardship, in many sleepless nights, in starvation and thirst, often hungry, in cold and without enough clothing” (2 Corinthians 11:24–27).

Paul endured these sufferings because the love of Christ compelled him forward. His labor was not driven by personal ambition or worldly recognition, but by devotion to God and compassion for others. True Christian love always moves beyond comfort and convenience. It willingly bears burdens, sacrifices time and energy, and perseveres through suffering for the sake of God’s kingdom.

Third, Paul speaks of the “patience of hope.” Biblical hope is not mere optimism or wishful thinking. It is a confident expectation rooted firmly in the promises of God and the finished work of Jesus Christ. Christian hope rests upon the birth, death, resurrection, and future return of Christ.

The word “patience” here refers to steadfast endurance under difficult circumstances. Because believers possess hope in Christ, they are able to endure suffering without despair. Hope enables Christians to look beyond present trials toward eternal glory.

The world often seeks immediate relief from suffering, but Scripture teaches believers to endure faithfully while trusting God’s ultimate purposes. Christians know that pain, persecution, and hardship are temporary. The Holy Spirit, whom Christ has given as the Helper and Comforter, strengthens believers to remain faithful until the end.

Throughout church history, countless believers endured persecution, imprisonment, rejection, and martyrdom because of their unwavering hope in Christ. Their confidence was not placed in earthly security, but in the eternal promises of God. The patience of hope allows Christians to remain steadfast even when circumstances appear dark or uncertain.

Faith, love, and hope therefore are not passive qualities. They are living realities produced by the grace of God. Faith works. Love labors. Hope endures. Together they form the visible evidence of a transformed life in Christ.

The modern church must recover this understanding. Christianity is not simply intellectual agreement with doctrine nor emotional religious experience. It is a life transformed by the grace of God and empowered by the Holy Spirit. Believers are called to demonstrate faith through obedience, love through sacrifice, and hope through perseverance.

In an age marked by confusion, division, selfishness, and moral compromise, Christians must shine as witnesses of God’s grace. The world desperately needs believers whose lives reflect holiness, compassion, steadfastness, and unwavering trust in Christ. Such a testimony cannot be produced through human effort alone. It is the fruit of God’s grace working within surrendered hearts.

Therefore, let every believer cherish these divine gifts and embrace the responsibility that accompanies them. Let faith produce righteous action. Let love inspire sacrificial service. Let hope cultivate endurance amid suffering. Through these virtues, the character of Christ becomes visible in the lives of His people.

May the grace of God, the love of Jesus Christ, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you always.
