The Greatest Challenge of the 21st Century Begins Within Us
By Dr. Samuel Lee
There are many urgent issues confronting our generation in the 21st century. Climate change, migration, food and water insecurity, regional conflicts, and economic inequality all demand serious attention. In recent years, however, the rise of powerful technology—and the question of how it should be governed—has become one of the most widely discussed subjects of our time.
The pace of technological change is astonishing. When I attended college, I used a manual typewriter until my junior year. As a graduation gift, I received an IBM compatible 286 computer. It did not have a hard drive; instead, it operated with two 5¼-inch floppy-disk drives. At the time, that computer seemed remarkably advanced.
Recently, I purchased a desktop computer with 32 gigabytes of RAM, an NVIDIA RTX 5060 graphics card, two terabytes of storage, and a 49-inch OLED monitor. The difference between these two machines illustrates how dramatically computing technology has advanced within a single lifetime.
Today, artificial intelligence can write essays, generate images, analyze enormous quantities of information, assist physicians, and perform tasks once thought to require uniquely human abilities. Robotics is also advancing rapidly, transforming factories, medicine, transportation, warfare, and everyday life. These technologies offer extraordinary possibilities, but they also raise difficult questions. What kinds of decisions should be entrusted to machines? Who will be held responsible when an automated system causes harm? How will workers and families be affected? How can we prevent powerful technologies from being used for manipulation, surveillance, oppression, or war?
Our technological power is increasing faster than our ability to govern it wisely. Yet this is not merely a political or technical problem. It is also a moral and spiritual one. Technology can expand human power, but it cannot tell us how that power ought to be used. A computer may help us accomplish something more efficiently, but it cannot determine whether that thing is righteous, just, or compassionate. Artificial intelligence can imitate human reasoning, but it cannot replace moral character.
As our society has progressed technologically, its reliance on God appears to have declined. This spiritual deterioration has been accompanied by a weakening of moral standards. The loss of shame is increasingly visible in both the public and private conduct of many people. Actions once regarded as dishonorable are now sometimes defended, celebrated, or dismissed as unimportant.
Churches have also lost moral authority because some spiritual leaders have failed to live according to what they preach. Immorality, greed, and extravagant lifestyles stand in sharp contrast to the teachings of the Bible. When religious leaders seek wealth, influence, and personal recognition rather than service, sacrifice, and holiness, people understandably become disillusioned.
Consequently, a growing number of people describe themselves as spiritual but do not identify with or participate in a local church. Some have been deeply hurt by religious institutions. Others have seen too much hypocrisy to trust organized religion. Churches should not respond defensively to this development. They should examine themselves honestly, repent where necessary, care for those who have been wounded, and recover their calling to serve with humility and integrity.
Scripture warns of the consequences when spiritual leaders fail to teach and embody the truth of God. Hosea 4:6 declares, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” The passage also rebukes religious leaders who rejected knowledge and neglected God’s law. The warning remains relevant: when those entrusted with spiritual responsibility abandon truth, entire communities suffer.
In a time of rapid change, we must therefore look beyond external threats and examine ourselves. Climate change, war, migration, and uncontrolled technology are serious dangers, but every institution and every technology ultimately reflects the character of the people who direct it. Before asking only what machines can do, we must ask what human beings should do. Before debating how society ought to be organized, we should ask more fundamental questions: Who are we? What is the purpose of life? What kind of people are we becoming? How, then, should we live?
The apostle Paul confronted this deeper question in his letter to the church at Ephesus. Writing from imprisonment, he urged believers: “I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called” (Ephesians 4:1). Paul understood his imprisonment in light of his service to Christ. Even in confinement, his primary concern was that Christians live in a manner worthy of God’s calling.
That calling is not simply an invitation to adopt a religious label or attend occasional services. Through Jesus Christ, God calls His people to holiness, to a transformed life marked by humility, truth, love, patience, self-control, mercy, and obedience. Our first priority, therefore, must be to fix our attention on Christ and respond faithfully to Him.
Christian activism may sound admirable, and many programs can accomplish genuine good. Christians should care for the poor, defend the vulnerable, pursue justice, and serve their communities. Yet activism becomes spiritually dangerous when activities and programs replace prayer, obedience, worship, and discipleship. It is possible to become so busy doing things in God’s name that we neglect our relationship with God.
God does not need our accomplishments. He desires our trust, dependence, and obedience. Service has lasting value when it grows out of spiritual maturity and a life surrendered to Him. Without that foundation, religious work can become another search for recognition, influence, or control.
The defining crisis of the 21st century may not be technological advancement itself, but whether our moral and spiritual development can keep pace with it. More powerful computers will not automatically produce wiser people. Artificial intelligence will not give humanity a righteous purpose. Robots cannot teach us humility, repentance, or love. If our character continues to weaken as our power increases, technological progress may only magnify our worst impulses.
The future will depend not only on the machines we build, the laws we pass, or the institutions we establish. It will also depend on the people we become.
It is my prayer that we will humble ourselves, listen to the Holy Spirit, and obey His direction. Only then can we use the remarkable powers of this century with wisdom, responsibility, and love.
