[이수관 목사의 목회의 길에서] 죄의 문제는 어떻게 해결할 수 있는가?

“죄의 문제는 어떻게 해결할 수 있는가? ”

믿지 않던 시절에 저를 가장 괴롭혔던 것은 죄의 문제였습니다. 나는 의로운 삶을 살고 싶은데 생각만 그럴 뿐이지 전혀 그렇게 살지 못하는 것이었습니다. 반대로 하지 말아야겠다고 생각하는 죄는 계속 지으면서 사는 나 자신을 보면서 스스로를 비하하곤 했습니다.

그러다 성경에 이 문제를 얘기하는 구절이 있음을 알고 놀랐습니다. 로마서 7:15절의 말씀이었습니다. “나는 내가 하는 일을 도무지 알 수가 없습니다. 내가 해야겠다고 생각하는 일은 하지 않고, 도리어 해서는 안 되겠다고 생각하는 일을 하고 있으니 말입니다.” 이 말씀과 함께 “오호라 나는 곤고한 사람이로다. 이 사망의 몸에서 누가 나를 건져내랴” 하는 24절의 말씀은 제가 항복할 수밖에 없도록 만들었습니다. 그래서 저는 고민하지 않고 믿음을 받아들였습니다.

하지만, 예수님을 영접하고 나서 꿈같은 시간이 지날 무렵부터 이해가 되지 않는 점이 하나 있었는데 그것은 내가 예수님을 영접하고 하나님의 자녀가 되었는데도 이와 같은 한탄이 내 입에서 깨끗이 사라지지 않는다는 것입니다. 그렇다면 이 말씀의 의미는 무엇이었을까? 왜 하나님은 내가 계속 죄와 엎치락뒤치락하게 두시는가? 이 문제를 내 힘으로 극복해야 한다면 결국 신앙은 내 의지와의 싸움이라는 말인가?

물론 이 실망은 가정교회를 만나면서 조금은 해소가 되었습니다. 가정교회에서 실천하는 삶의 나눔과 섬김과 순종은 천천히 우리의 삶을 바꾸고 있는 것이 확실하니 말입니다. 우리의 성품이 변하고, 하나님과의 관계가 만들어지는 것이 분명하니 말입니다. 하지만 그런 변화에도 불구하고 죄의 문제는 여전히 해결되지 않는 골칫거리였습니다. 왜 우리는 계속해서 죄의 유혹에 끌리는 것일까? 왜 하나님은 이 문제를 걷어가지 않으시는 것일까? 내가 구원받은 존재라면 왜 나의 의지는 이토록 힘을 발휘하지 못하는 것일까?

이 문제에 대한 답은 두 가지라고 봅니다. 첫 번째는 하나님은 인격적인 분이시므로 우리에게 자유의지를 허락하는 것이 너무나 중요하십니다. 우리를 창조하실 때 죄를 짓지 않는 로봇으로 만들지 않고 인격적인 존재로 만드시고 우리에게 온전한 자유의지를 허락하신 것처럼, 우리가 구원받았다고 해서 그 자유의지를 가져가시고 순종밖에 할 줄 모르는 로봇으로 만들지는 않으신다는 사실입니다. 이 문제는 우리를 향한 하나님의 배려입니다.

두 번째는 그렇기 때문에 하나님은 우리에게 성령님을 허락하셨다는 것입니다. 따라서 우리의 신앙의 승리는 우리가 얼마나 전적으로 성령님께 의지할 수 있는가에 달려 있다는 것입니다. 만약 어떤 사람이 일주일에 한 번 교회에 와서 예배드리고는 다 잊고 세상에서 일주일을 산다면 그는 안 믿는 사람과 별다르지 않는 삶을 살 것이고, 반면에 하루에 적어도 아침저녁만이라도 기도하고 묵상하는 사람이라면 그보다는 나을 것이지만, 결국 우리가 성령님께 온전히 기대어 있을 때 우리는 죄의 권세를 극복할 수 있는 것이지요.

하지만 우리는 여전히 죄의 습관을 가진 사람들이므로 계속 실패할 것입니다. 하지만 염려할 필요 없습니다. 왜냐하면 로마서 8:1절에 이어서 “그러므로 그리스도 예수 안에 있는 사람들은 정죄를 받지 않습니다”라고 하셨기 때문입니다. 따라서 신앙이란 결국 의지력의 싸움이 아니라 성령 의존의 싸움이라고 볼 수 있습니다. 성령님을 떠나면 우리는 죄를 이기지 못합니다. 늘 그분께 의지하고 그분의 동행을 의식하며 살고, 그러다 혹시라도 또 실패하면 뒤엣것은 잊어버리고 또 앞을 향해서 갈 때 우리는 조금씩 예수님을 닮을 수 있는 것 같습니다.

HOW CAN WE OVERCOME THE PROBLEM OF SIN?

One of the things that troubled me most before I became a Christian was the problem of sin. I wanted to live a righteous life, but that desire remained only in my thoughts. In reality, I was far from living the way I wanted to. On the other hand, I kept committing the very sins that I was determined not to commit. As I looked at myself, I often became discouraged and looked down on myself.

Then I was surprised to discover that there was a passage in Scripture that spoke directly to this struggle. It was Romans 7:15: “I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.” Along with this verse, Romans 7:24, “What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death?” left me with no choice but to surrender. As a result, I embraced faith without hesitation.

However, after I accepted Christ and the initial excitement of my new life in Him began to settle, I found myself struggling with a question. Even though I had received Jesus and become a child of God, this cry of frustration had not completely disappeared from my life. What, then, was the meaning of this passage? Why does God allow me to continue wrestling with sin? If I am expected to overcome this problem through my own effort, does that mean the Christian life is ultimately a battle of willpower?

Of course, many of these questions began to find answers when I encountered house church. The practice of sharing life together, serving one another, and living in obedience was clearly transforming people’s lives. We could see character being changed and genuine relationships with God being formed. Yet despite those changes, the problem of sin remained a persistent challenge. Why are we still drawn to temptation? Why doesn’t God simply remove this struggle from us? If I am truly saved, why does my will seem so powerless?

I believe there are two answers to these questions. First, because God is personal, it is extremely important to Him that we have free will. When He created us, He did not make us into robots incapable of sinning. Instead, He created us as personal beings and granted us genuine freedom of choice. Likewise, when we are saved, He does not take away that freedom and turn us into robots that can do nothing but obey. This is part of God’s gracious consideration toward us.

Second, because of this, God has given us the Holy Spirit. Therefore, victory in the Christian life depends on how completely we rely on the Holy Spirit. If a person attends church once a week, worships, and then forgets about God for the rest of the week, that person’s life will not look much different from that of an unbeliever. Someone who prays and meditates on God’s Word every morning and evening may do better, but ultimately, we overcome the power of sin only when we learn to depend fully on the Holy Spirit.

Of course, we still carry sinful habits and tendencies, so we will continue to fail from time to time. But there is no need to despair, because Romans 8:1 declares, “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” The Christian life is not ultimately a battle of willpower; it is a battle of dependence on the Holy Spirit. Apart from Him, we cannot overcome sin. As we continually depend on Him, remain conscious of His presence, and walk with Him daily, even when we fail, we can forget what is behind and press on toward what is ahead. In doing so, we gradually become more and more like Jesus.
