악의 얼굴 

이스라엘과 팔레스타인의 갈등은 고대사와 얽힌 현대적 비극입니다. 대다수의 인류학자들은 고대 가나안 사람들이 팔레스타인의 조상이라고 믿고 있습니다. 여호수아 11장에 따르면 그들은 여호수아가 주전 1405년경에 약속의 땅에 동의했을 때 그 땅을 차지하고 있다고 했으며 가나안 사람들은 우상 숭배와 배도의 원인으로 인해 이스라엘의 가시였다고 기록됩니다(신명기 20:17-18). 그들은 이스라엘에게 적대적이었고 음탕하고 사악하다고 묘사되었습니다. 팔레스타인 사람들은 아랍 출신입니다. 그들은 서기 610년 이후 이슬람의 영향을 많이 받았으며 그들은 그 이후로 계속해서 이 지역에서 기독교와 유대인에 맞서 싸워왔습니다.

2023년 10월 7일 이른 아침, 하마스는 예고도 없이 이스라엘을 공격했습니다. 그들은 1,500명 이상을 무차별 살해하고 150명 이상의 인질을 납치했습니다. 이들 중 상당수는 유아를 포함해 비무장 민간인이었습니다. 아이들을 참수하고 강간당한 여성을 옷도 입히지 않은 채 걸어가게 하는 것은 전쟁의 희생자가 아니라 단순히 야만적인 순수악일 뿐입니다. 하마스가 말했듯이 그들의 존재 목적은 이스라엘을 파괴하고 유대인을 살해하는 것입니다. 결과적으로 이스라엘은 하마스와 전쟁을 벌이고 있으며 팔레스타인 영토 침공을 준비하고 있습니다. 로켓이 양방향으로 날아가면서 사상자가 늘어나고 있습니다.

전쟁에는 승자가 없습니다. 모두가 자신의 편에 상관없이 고통받습니다. 싸워야 하더라도 갈등 속에서도 어느 정도 지킬 예의가 있습니다. 그리스도인들이 악의 얼굴을 볼 때 무엇을 이해하고 어떻게 행동해야 되는지 생각할 때입니다. 여기에 세 가지를 함께 논의하고자 합니다.

첫째, 무고한 생명을 위험으로부터 보호해야 합니다. 이스라엘에 공감하며 그들의 희생자들 위해 복수하고 싶다는 마음도 이해가 됩니다. 그러나 이스라엘이 복수의 마음보다는 납치된 인질들을 구출하고 무고한 팔레스타인 민간인들이 하마스 영토에서 대피할 수 있도록 허용하는 것이 더욱 중요하다고 생각합니다. 성경에서 “원수 갚는 것이 내게 있으니 내가 갚으리라 하시고 또 다시 주께서 그의 백성을 심판하리라 말씀하신 것을 우리가 아노니”(히 10:30)라고 하십니다.

둘째, 그리스도인들은 국가를 수호하기 위한 자위의 입장과 보복을 위한 침략의 입장 사이의 차이를 이해해야 합니다. 최근 하마스를 옹호하며 이스라엘에 책임을 묻는 의견도 우리 주변에서 보게 됩니다. 하마스는 악의 대표자로서 자신들의 기반을 잃었습니다. 그들은 독립이나 평화적 해결을 추구하는 것이 아니라 인류에 대한 무차별적인 공격으로 지정학적 야심을 추구하고 있습니다. 옳은 것과 그른 것을 분별하고 옳은 것을 옹호하려면 하나님의 지혜를 구해야 합니다.

마지막으로, 그리스도인들은 전쟁 희생자들에게 도움을 주어야 합니다. 우리는 전쟁의 기간과 결과에 대해 확신하지 못합니다. 무고한 희생자들이 있을 것이며, 그리스도인들은 신체적, 영적 도움이 필요한 사람들에게 실질적인 지원을 제공할 준비가 되어 있어야 합니다. 야고보는 그리스도인들에게 실천적이 될 것을 촉구합니다. “만일 형제나 자매가 헐벗고 일용할 양식이 없는데 너희 중에 누구든지 그에게 이르되 평안히 가라, 덥게 하라, 배부르게 하라 하며 그 몸에 쓸 것을 주지 아니하면 무슨 유익이 있으리요”(야고보서 2:15-16)

무엇보다도 이 땅, 특히 이스라엘에 예수님의 평화가 함께 하기를 기도합니다.

The Face of Evil 

The conflict between Israel and Palestine is a modern tragedy entwined with ancient history. The majority of anthropologists believe ancient Canaanites are the ancestors of Palestine. They occupied the land when Joshua concurred with the promised land around 1405 B.C., according to the book of Joshua 11. Canaanites were thorns in the flesh of Israel due to their idol worship and cause of apostasy (Deuteronomy 20:17-18). They were hostile to Israel and described as licentious and wicked. Palestinian people are of Arab origin, meaning they were heavily influenced by Islam after 610 A.D. They have struggled against Christianity and Jews in the region ever since.

In the early morning of October 7, 2023, Hamas attacked Israel without warning. They indiscriminately killed more than 1,500 people and kidnapped over 150 hostages. Many of them were unarmed civilians, including infant babies. Beheading of children and parading of raped women without clothing are not a casualty of war but simply barbaric pure evil. As Hamas stated, their purpose for existence is to destroy Israel and to murder Jews. Consequently, Israel is at war with Hamas and preparing to invade Palestine’s territory. As rockets fly in both directions, more casualties are mounting.

A war has no winner; all suffer regardless of their side. However, if we have to fight, we must maintain certain decency even in conflict. What shall we understand and do when Christians see the face of evil? First, we must protect innocent lives from danger. I sympathize with Israel and desire to revenge their victims. However, I strongly urge Israel to rescue kidnapped hostages and allow innocent Palestinian civilians to evacuate from the Hamas territory. Allow God to be the Judge as the Scripture says, “It is mine to avenge; I will repay, and again the Lord will judge his people”(Heb 10:30).

Second, Christians must understand the difference between the position of self-defense as a preservation of the nation versus aggression of revenge. Hamas just lost its ground by being the representation of evil. They are not seeking independence or peaceful resolution but promoting their geopolitical ambitions with indiscriminatory assault on humanity. Knowing right from wrong and advocating right requires seeking His wisdom.

Last, Christians must provide aid for the victims of the war. We are not sure about the length and effects of war. There will be innocent victims, and Christians must be ready to provide tangible support to those in physical and spiritual need. James urges Christians to be practical, “If a brother or sister be naked and in lack of daily food, and one of you say unto them, Go in peace, be ye warmed and filled; and yet ye give them not the things needful to the body; what doth it profit?”(James 2:15-16).

Most of all, let us pray for His peace on earth, especially in Israel.
