하나님이 만드신 온 우주는 너무나 광대하고 아름답고 신비롭다. 우리가 사는 은하계만 해도 그 끝을 다 알 수 없을 만큼 넓고 신비에 휩싸여 있다. 과학자들은 외계 생명체를 찾기 위해 수많은 연구와 탐험을 해왔지만, 아직 지구 밖 그 어디에서도 생명체를 발견하지 못했다. 오직 지구에만 셀 수 없이 많은 생명체가 하늘과 땅, 땅 아래와 물속을 가득 채우고 있다.

지구상에 존재하는 생명체를 구성하는 기본 요소는 흙과 수분이다. 그런데 하나님은 사람의 눈에 보이지 않는 영역도 만드셨다. 고대 철학과 기독교의 인간론에서는 눈에 보이지 않는 생명의 차원을 세 가지로 구분한다. 첫째는 식물에 존재하는 생혼(生魂)이다. 식물에도 번식하고 성장하며 활동하게 하는 생혼이 있다고 믿는다. 그래서 어떤 사람들은 나무나 꽃에 말을 걸기도 한다. 둘째는 각혼(覺魂)을 가진 동물이다. 동물은 감각과 지각 능력을 바탕으로 활동한다. 그래서 사람들은 집에서 키우는 반려동물과 정서적, 혼적인 교류를 나누기도 한다. 그러나 동물은 죽음과 동시에 소멸한다. 셋째는 영혼(靈魂)을 가진 사람이다. 인간은 지성과 감성뿐만 아니라 자유 의지와 양심을 함께 지닌 특별한 존재다. 그리고 인간의 영혼은 죽음 이후에도 결코 소멸하지 않는다.

하나님이 세상을 지으실 때 먼저 식물을 만드시고, 그 다음에 동물을 종류대로 만드셨다. 그리고 맨 마지막으로 사람을 창조하셨다. 그런데 하나님은 사람을 지으실 때 당신의 모양과 형상대로 만드셨고, 흙으로 사람을 빚으신 후 그 코에 생기(영)를 불어넣으셨다. 성경은 이로써 사람이 생령이 되었다고 기록한다. 동물이 아무리 사랑스러워도 그들에게는 영혼이 없다. 오직 사람에게만 하나님을 닮은 영혼이 내재되어 있는 것이다. 사람은 만물의 영장이며 가장 신비로운 존재다. 사람은 세상을 다스리고, 끊임없이 무언가를 발명하며 발전해 나간다. 그러나 동물은 수천 년이 지나도 살아가는 방식이 조금도 바뀌지 않는다.

이 진리를 깨달았던 다윗은 시편 139편 14절에서 “내가 주께 감사하옴은 나를 지으심이 심히 기묘하심이라 주께서 하시는 일이 기이함을 내 영혼이 잘 아나이다”라고 고백했다. 하나님은 사람을 너무나도 신비하고 영광스러운 영적 존재로 만드신 것이다. 그래서 사람은 신의 존재를 어느 정도 깨닫고 감각할 수 있으며, 하나님과 신비로운 관계를 맺고 교제할 수 있다. 지금 하나님을 향해 당신의 생각과 마음을 열고 성경을 펼쳐보라. 성경은 하나님이 인간에게 자신을 나타내기 위해 기록하게 하신 가장 완전한 책이다. 성경을 열면 신비한 빛이 비치며, 하나님께서 당신의 영혼에 말씀하실 것이다(시편 119:130).

The Vegetative Soul, the Sensitive Soul, and the Human Spirit

The entire universe created by God is immensely vast, beautiful, and mysterious. Even the galaxy we live in is so expansive that it is beyond our full comprehension and remains shrouded in mystery. Scientists have conducted extensive research and exploration to find extraterrestrial life, yet they have not found any living organisms anywhere beyond Earth. Only Earth is teeming with countless living creatures, filling the skies, the land, the underground, and the waters.

The basic elements of living organisms on Earth consist of soil and water. However, God also created realms that are invisible to the human eye. In ancient philosophy and Christian anthropology, this invisible dimension of life is categorized into three types. First is the vegetative soul present in plants. It is believed that plants possess a vegetative soul that allows them to reproduce, grow, and function. This is why some people even talk to trees or flowers. Second are animals, which possess a sensitive soul. Animals act based on their capacity for sensation and perception. Thus, people often share an emotional and soul-level connection with their pets. However, the souls of animals cease to exist upon their death. Third are humans, who possess a rational soul (or spirit). Therefore, humans are special beings endowed not only with intellect and emotion but also with free will and a conscience. Furthermore, the human soul is never extinguished, even after death.

When God created the world, He first made plants, and then He created animals according to their kinds. Finally, He created humanity. However, when God created humans, He made them in His own image and likeness. After forming man from the dust of the ground, He breathed the breath of life (the spirit) into his nostrils. Thus, the Bible records that man became a living soul. No matter how adorable and affectionate animals may be, they do not possess a spirit. Only humans have a spirit endowed within them that resembles God. Because of this, humans exercise dominion over the world, continuously inventing and advancing. In contrast, the way animals live does not change in the slightest, even over thousands of years. This is why humans are called the lords of all creation and are considered the most mysterious of beings.

Realizing this truth, David confessed in Psalm 139:14, “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” God created humans to be profoundly mysterious and glorious spiritual beings. As a result, humans are capable of perceiving and sensing the existence of the divine to a certain extent, and they can establish a mysterious relationship and commune with God. Now, open your mind and heart toward God and open the Bible. The Bible is the most perfect book God caused to be written to reveal Himself to humanity. As you open the Bible, a wondrous light will shine, and God will speak to your soul (Psalm 119:130).
