NEED, WANT, AND SERVICE

There are people among us who say, “I want to become someone who is truly needed by others.” If this comes from a healthy desire to serve, it is a good thing. But if it comes from an anxiety about not being loved, it can be a dangerous way of thinking. When a person bases his or her value on being needed, the moment no one seems to need them anymore, their reason for existence begins to disappear.

In fact, many people live with this kind of insecurity. They believe that if they fail to be useful or needed, others will leave them. As a result, they live exhausting lives. They find it difficult to say no, avoid speaking hard truths, and constantly feel the need to please others. Some even live with the fear that if they fail to be a good husband or wife, their spouse may leave them. All of this stems from the belief that when their usefulness ends, their value and purpose also disappear.

But that is not really true. There are things whose significance is great even though they are not needed. Children are a good example. Children need their parents twenty-four hours a day, but parents do not actually need their children. In many ways, children can even be an interruption. When parents want to rest, enjoy a quiet date together, or simply have some personal time, children seem to call for their attention at every moment. Yet parents do not abandon their children simply because they are not needed. Why? Because children are the fruit of their love and bear their likeness. Children hold profound meaning in the hearts of their parents. Therefore, parents may not need their children, but they deeply want them.

The same is true of God. God does not need us. He lacks nothing and therefore does not require our help or even our worship. God is not diminished when we ignore Him, nor is He increased when we praise Him. Yet although we are not necessary to God, we are deeply significant to Him. We are His children, created in His image. For that reason, God does not need us, but He wants us. He desires a relationship with us, and He delights in our worship.

The church is much the same. Many people attend church because of their needs. When those needs disappear and there is nothing more to gain, they leave. They assume that when their need is gone, there is no longer any reason to remain. What they fail to realize is that the church contains something far more valuable than merely meeting personal needs.

God does not need the church. If there is something He wishes to accomplish, He is fully capable of doing it Himself. Yet the church, which is being built by His children together, holds great significance in His heart. The church is the place where God’s children, knowing that they are loved by Him, come together to share life, love one another, experience healing, and fulfill His mission. That is why God truly desires the church.

Seeing God’s people use their time, gifts, and efforts to build up the church brings great joy to His heart. My prayer is that every member will respond to God’s calling by serving in one house church ministry and one United Church ministry, so that together we may become a church filled with the joy of God.
