“사기꾼들이 좋아하는 사람”

한 심리학자가 있습니다. 이분이 어느 방송에 나와서 본인이 생각하기에 여러 범죄 가운데 가장 질 나쁜 범죄는 사기치는 것이라고 했습니다. 다른 흉악한 죄가 많은데 왜 그렇게 생각하느냐고 물었더니 사기꾼이 저지르는 죄는 가벼운 것처럼 보이지만, 조금만 들여다보면 작은 사기로 인해서 한 가정이 천천히 파멸되기도 하고, 한 사람을 천천히 죽음으로 몰고 가기도 하기 때문에 사실은 사기가 가장 흉악한 범죄라는 것입니다. 

반면에 이 사람들은 본인의 죄의 심각성을 모르기 때문에 반성도 없고, 쉽게 고쳐지지도 않아서 사기죄는 절대 1범이 없답니다. 그래서 본인은 심리 치료사이지만 사기꾼에게는 치료를 시도하지 않는다는 것입니다. 그러던 어느 날 사기 14범인 사람이 자기를 만나달라고 했답니다. 처음은 거절하려고 했는데 왜 사기를 치는지, 어떤 사람이 사기에 넘어 가는지가 궁금해서 만났다는 것입니다. 그 사람에 따르면 사기꾼에게 가장 잘 넘어 가는 사람은 두려움이 있거나 외로움이 있는 사람이라는 것입니다.

두려움이 있는 사람들은 최악의 상황을 자주 상상하고, 불안해하고, 손해를 보는 것을 두려워하며, 권위 있는 사람의 말에 압도되기 쉬워서 계좌가 해킹을 당할 거라든지, 세금을 안 내서 체포가 될 거라든지, 오늘 안에 투자하지 않으면 기회를 놓친다는 말에 쉽게 그리고 빨리 반응한다고 합니다. 반면 외로움이 있는 사람의 특성은 인정받고 싶은 욕구가 강하고, 누군가와의 정서적인 연결의 욕구가 강하고, 친절을 호감으로 받아 드리기 때문에 조금만 잘해 주면 쉽게 넘어온다는 것이지요.

이런 사람들은 만나서 대화를 나누어 보면 금방 식별이 가능하답니다. 묻지도 않는데 자신의 얘기를 털어 놓는다든지, 상대의 기분에 지나치게 신경을 쓴다든지, 상대를 불편하게 만드는 것이 싫어서 거절을 못 한다든지 하는 사람들을 눈여겨 보고 대상으로 삼는다고 합니다.

얘기를 들으면서 두 가지가 생각이 났습니다. 첫 번째는 잠언에서도 비슷한 얘기를 하고 있다는 것입니다. 잠언에는 ‘어리석은 자’에 대한 언급이 많은데 ‘어리석은 자’는 지능이 낮은 사람이 아닙니다. 욕심이 많고, 칭찬에 약하고, 두려움에 사로잡혀 있고, 외로움을 타서 유혹에 쉽게 끌리고 쉽게 넘어지는 사람을 어리석다고 얘기합니다. 그리고 그런 사람들에게는 지혜가 필요한데, 지혜의 근본은 하나님이라고 반복해서 얘기합니다.

두 번째는 그 문제를 해결해 주겠다고 접근하는 사기꾼의 친절에는 그렇게 쉽게 넘어가면서도 왜 우리의 친절에는 그토록 완강한 것일까 하는 것입니다. 결국 우리가 가지고 있는 외로움과 두려움을 진정으로 치유해 주실 수 있는 분은 하나님인데 왜 하나님을 찾지 않을까? 우리도 똑같이 그런 외로움과 두려움에 시달리던 사람들이고, 우리에게는 그 문제로부터 자유하게 된 간증이 있는데 왜 우리의 친절과 간증에는 넘어가지 않는 것일까 하는 생각이 들었습니다.

결국 그들에게 필요한 것은 좋은 공동체입니다. 공동체에 몸을 담고 있어서 신뢰할 수 있는 사람들과 상의하고 도움을 요청한다면 그렇게 쉽게 속아 넘어가지는 않을 것입니다. 그리고 그런 공동체 안에서 사랑받고 사랑하다 보면 그들을 오랫동안 괴롭히던 그 외로움과 두려움은 어느새 사라져 있을 텐데 그것을 너무 늦지 않게 알았으면 하는 바람입니다.

THE KIND OF PEOPLE SCAMMERS LOVE

There was a psychologist who once appeared on a television program and said that, among the many types of crimes, he believed fraud was the most reprehensible. When asked why he thought so, considering that there are many violent and heinous crimes, he explained that although fraud may seem relatively minor on the surface, a closer look reveals that even a small act of fraud can slowly destroy an entire family or drive a person toward despair and death. For that reason, he considered fraud to be one of the most vicious crimes.

He went on to say that fraudsters are often unaware of the true seriousness of their wrongdoing. Because they rarely feel genuine remorse and are difficult to reform, there is practically no such thing as a first-time fraud offender. Most become repeat offenders. Although he is a therapist, he said that he does not even attempt to treat fraudsters. One day, however, a man who had been convicted of fraud fourteen times asked to meet with him. At first, he intended to refuse, but curiosity got the better of him. He wanted to understand why people commit fraud and what kinds of people are most likely to become victims. According to this man, the easiest people to deceive are those who are driven by fear or loneliness.

People who live with fear often imagine worst-case scenarios. They are anxious, afraid of loss, and easily intimidated by authority figures. As a result, they tend to react quickly and impulsively when someone tells them that their bank account has been hacked, that they will be arrested for unpaid taxes, or that they will miss a once-in-a-lifetime investment opportunity if they do not act immediately. Lonely people, on the other hand, tend to have a strong desire for recognition and emotional connection. They often interpret kindness as personal affection, making them easy targets for manipulation. A little attention and kindness can quickly win their trust.

The fraudster explained that such people are easy to identify in conversation. They volunteer personal information even when no one asks. They are overly concerned about how others feel. They have difficulty saying no because they do not want to make anyone uncomfortable. These are the kinds of people fraudsters pay close attention to and deliberately target.

As I listened to this story, two thoughts came to mind. First, it reminded me of the Book of Proverbs. Proverbs frequently speaks about “the fool,” but a fool in Proverbs is not someone with low intelligence. Rather, it is someone who is driven by greed, vulnerable to flattery, controlled by fear, or so lonely that he is easily tempted and deceived. Proverbs teaches that such people need wisdom, and it repeatedly reminds us that the foundation of wisdom is found in God.

Second, I found myself wondering why people are so easily persuaded by the kindness of a fraudster who promises to solve their problems, yet often remain resistant to the kindness we offer. After all, God is the One who can truly heal the fears and loneliness that burden people’s hearts. Why, then, do they not seek Him? We, too, once struggled with the same fears and loneliness. We have testimonies of how God set us free from those burdens. Why is it that people are so easily won over by deception, yet remain unmoved by genuine kindness and authentic testimonies?

Ultimately, what many of these people need is a healthy community. If they are connected to a community where they can seek counsel from trustworthy people and ask for help when needed, they are far less likely to become victims of deception. And as they experience both giving and receiving love within that community, the loneliness and fear that have troubled them for so long may gradually disappear. My hope is that they will discover this truth before it is too late.
