빚진 자

우리는 흔히 빚진 사람을 ‘빚쟁이’라는 말로 낮추어 부르곤 한다. 주로 돈을 빌리고 제때 갚지 않았을 때 이런 말을 붙인다. 그런데 세상에는 또 다른 종류의 빚도 있다. 만약 우리가 누구에게 은혜를 입었다면 은혜의 빚을 진 것이고, 도움을 받았다면 도움의 빚을 진 것이다. 이런 차원에서 보면 이 세상을 살아가는 사람들은 모두 다 큰 빚을 진 사람들이다. 우리는 과연 어떤 빚을 진 것일까? 우리가 진 빚은 수없이 많지만, 가장 큰 빚은 두 가지이다.

첫째, 우리는 사랑의 빚을 진 사람들이다. 우리가 지금까지 살아올 수 있었던 것은 누군가로부터 사랑을 받았기 때문에 가능했다. 혹시 “나는 아무에게도 사랑받지 못했어”라고 생각하는 사람이 있을지도 모르겠다. 그러나 우리가 사랑받지 못한 것이 아니라, 이미 받은 사랑을 기억하고 인식하지 못할 뿐이다. 우리는 부모님과 선생님, 친지와 친구들, 때로는 우리가 모르는 사람들로부터 끊임없이 사랑을 받으며 살아왔다. 더 나아가 우리는 하나님으로부터 큰 사랑을 받아 살았고 지금도 그 사랑받으며 살고 있다. 로마서 13장 8절에서 바울은 “피차 사랑의 빚 외에는 아무에게든지 아무 빚도 지지 말라”고 했다. 이 말은 우리가 사랑의 빚을 지지 않고는 살 수 없는 존재라는 뜻이다. 성경은 “하나님은 사랑이시라”고 선포한다(요한일서 4:16). 하나님은 육신을 입고 이 땅에 찾아오셔서 죄인들을 위해 죽기까지 사랑하셨다. 얼마나 크고 놀라운 사랑인가! 시편 기자는 노래하기를 “세상에는 여호와의 인자하심이 충만하다”라고 했다(시편 33:5). 우리는 사랑의 주체인 하나님으로부터 엄청난 사랑의 빚을 지금도 계~속 지고 있다. 우리는 사랑의 큰 빚을 진 자들이다.

둘째, 우리는 복음의 빚을 진 사람들이다. 마가복음 1장 1절을 보면 예수님이 복음의 시작이라고 했다. 예수님이 이 땅에 태어나셨을 때, 천사들은 목자들에게 나타나 온 백성에게 미칠 큰 기쁨의 좋은 소식을 전해 주었다. 천사들이 전한 그 기쁨의 좋은 소식이 무엇이었나? 누가복음 2장 11절에 잘 기록되기를 “오늘 다윗의 동네에 너희를 위하여 구주가 나셨으니 곧 그리스도 주시니라”라고 했다. 예수님 자체가 큰 기쁨의 좋은 소식, 곧 복음이라는 것이다. 예수님은 우리의 죄를 대신하여 십자가에서 피 흘려 대속의 제물로 죽으셨다. 그래서 성경은 누구든지 예수님의 죽음이 바로 자신의 죄 때문임을 믿고 죄에서 돌이키면 죄 사함을 받는다고 선포한다. 그리고 영생의 선물을 받게 된다고 했다. 이 놀라운 복음을 마음에 받아들인 사람들은 심령의 대변혁을 경험할 것이다. 그리고 더 나아가 복음의 빚을 진 자가 된다. 사도 바울은 로마서 1장 14절에서 자신을 가리켜 복음의 “빚진 자”라고 했다. 그래서 그는 어찌하든지 복음 전하기를 원한다고 말했으며, 결국 복음을 전하다가 순교했다.

우리는 살면서 세상의 다른 빚은 지지 않도록 해야 하지만, 사랑과 복음의 빚은 반드시 져야 한다. 그래야 우리가 살 수 있고 또 영원히 살 수 있다. 우리는 하나님의 사랑과 복음을 통해 많은 죄를 영원히 모두 탕감받았다. 그리고 영생을 얻고 천국을 약속받은 것이다. 그렇게 구원받은 우리는 이제 빚진 자가 되어 이 땅을 살아가게 된다. 그래서 어떤 이들은 빚진 자의 심정으로 정든 고향 땅을 뒤로하고 선교를 떠나기도 한다. 우리는 이제 지금 있는 바로 그 자리에서 영혼들을 섬기며, 사랑의 빚과 복음의 빚을 갚으며 살아야 하겠다. 단순히 의무나 책임감 때문이 아니라, 감사와 자원하는 마음, 즉 빚진 자의 심정으로 해야 할 것이다.

The Debtor

We often use the derogatory term “bitjaengi” (deadbeat) to look down on someone who owes money, usually when they borrow money and fail to pay it back on time. However, there is another kind of debt in this world. If we receive grace from someone, we owe a debt of grace; if we receive help, we owe a debt of help. In this light, everyone living in this world is heavily in debt. What kind of debt do we actually owe? While our debts are countless, the two greatest are as follows.

First, we are debtors of love. We have been able to live up to this moment only because we have received love from someone. Some might think, “I have never been loved by anyone.” However, it is not that we haven’t been loved, but rather that we fail to remember and recognize the love we have already received. We have lived our lives constantly receiving love from our parents, teachers, relatives, friends, and sometimes even from strangers. Furthermore, we have lived by receiving great love from God, and we continue to live in that love today. In Romans 13:8, Paul states, “Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another.” This implies that we are beings who cannot live without owing a debt of love. The Bible declares, “God is love” (1 John 4:16). God came to this earth in human flesh and loved sinners to the point of dying for them. How great and wondrous is this love! The Psalmist sang, “The earth is full of the goodness of the Lord” (Psalm 33:5). We are still continuously running up an immense debt of love to God, the very source of love. We are indeed great debtors of love.

Second, we are debtors of the Gospel. Mark 1:1 tells us that Jesus is the beginning of the Gospel. When Jesus was born on this earth, angels appeared to the shepherds and brought them good news of great joy that would be for all the people. What was this good news of great joy proclaimed by the angels? It is beautifully recorded in Luke 2:11: “Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.” Jesus Himself is the good news of great joy—the Gospel. Jesus died on the cross, shedding His blood as a redeeming sacrifice in our place for our sins. Therefore, the Bible declares that anyone who believes Jesus died because of their own sins, and turns away from them, will receive forgiveness. It also promises that they will receive the gift of eternal life. Those who accept this wondrous Gospel into their hearts will experience a great transformation of the soul. Furthermore, they become debtors of the Gospel. In Romans 1:14, the Apostle Paul refers to himself as a “debtor” to the Gospel. That is why he expressed an earnest desire to preach the Gospel by any means, and ultimately, he was martyred while spreading it.

While we should try not to owe any worldly debts in this life, we must absolutely owe the debts of love and the Gospel. Only then can we truly live, and live eternally. Through God’s love and the Gospel, our numerous sins have been fully and eternally canceled. We have gained eternal life and have been promised the kingdom of heaven. Having been saved in this way, we now live on this earth as debtors. This is why some people leave their beloved hometowns behind to go on missions, driven by the heart of a debtor. We must now serve souls right where we are, living out our lives to repay the debt of love and the debt of the Gospel. This should not be done simply out of duty or obligation, but with a heart of gratitude and willingness—the true heart of a debtor.
