THE COURAGE TO FACE PAIN

One of the most important attitudes we need to develop in life is the willingness to face pain. None of us can avoid problems and the suffering that comes with them. From the very beginning, God told us that life in this fallen world would be difficult because it is imperfect and corrupted by sin (Genesis 3:17–18). Therefore, we must accept the reality that suffering is an inevitable part of life.

However, if we refuse to accept this simple truth and think that suffering will not or should not happen to us, life becomes even more painful. Ultimately, success or failure in life depends largely on whether we are willing to welcome challenges rather than fear them, and whether we can allow the pain they bring to become a means of training and growth in our lives (James 1:2).

Unfortunately, most of us do not respond this way. We fear the pain that problems bring and do everything we can to avoid it. We delay dealing with issues, hoping they will somehow disappear on their own. We ignore them, try to forget them, or even pretend they do not exist. Some people numb themselves with alcohol or other distractions in an attempt to escape their pain. The famous psychiatrist and psychologist Carl Jung once said, “Neurosis is always a substitute for legitimate suffering.”

God never promised that those who trust in Him would be able to avoid suffering altogether. Therefore, a prayer such as, “Lord, please keep problems from happening to me,” is probably not in line with His purposes. Instead, God is more interested in developing our spiritual muscles so that, through His help, we can overcome suffering. The church, therefore, should be a place where we train our inner selves to overcome problems and endure hardships.

For that reason, when problems arise within the church, please do not try to solve them by hiding, avoiding, or running away. Sometimes it may seem that the pain we experience would disappear if we simply stopped attending our house church or left the church altogether. That may appear to be the easiest solution, but it is neither a real solution nor a path to growth. It is simply an extension of the way we have always lived—swallowing what is sweet and spitting out what is bitter. Such an attitude will only lead us into deeper suffering.

A researcher once studied whether children eat the frosting on a cake first or save it for last while eating the rest of the cake. The study suggested that people who constantly pursue what is immediately enjoyable and easy are far more likely to fail in life. When we set aside the easy solution and choose instead to face what is difficult and unpleasant, life teaches us, transforms us, and strengthens our spiritual muscles.

What we should truly fear is not the problem itself but the habit of avoiding problems; not the pain itself but the attitude of refusing to face it. As we learn not to run from our problems and suffering but to confront them with faith, we will experience the help of God in powerful and meaningful ways.
