우리의 희망

예수 그리스도의 탄생은 인류 역사에서 가장 중대한 사건입니다. 그 어떤 탄생도 그처럼 세상의 흐름을 바꾸고, 수많은 삶을 절망에서 소망으로, 어둠에서 빛으로 옮겨 놓은 적이 없습니다. 그리스도의 오심은 지금도 여전히 우리의 삶을 만지시고 회복시키고 계십니다. 누가복음 2장 14절에 기록된 천사의 선포는 그분의 탄생을 이렇게 알립니다.

“지극히 높은 곳에서는 하나님께 영광이요, 땅에서는 하나님이 기뻐하시는 사람들 중에 평화로다.”

얼마나 깊은 은혜요, 얼마나 큰 위로입니까!

여기서 말하는 평화는 인간이 생각하는 전쟁이나 갈등의 부재가 아닙니다. 오히려 그 어떤 세력도 빼앗거나 위협할 수 없는, 하나님께서 우리와 함께하시는 임재의 평화입니다. 그리스도의 탄생은 바로 이 새로운 현실-임마누엘, “하나님이 우리와 함께 하신다”-를 세상 속에 확립하신 사건입니다.

더 놀라운 것은, 이 영광스러운 소식을 처음 들은 사람들이 들판의 목자들이었다는 사실입니다. 예수 당시의 목자들은 사회에서 가장 낮은 계층으로 여겨졌습니다. 양을 돌보는 일이 필요하긴 하지만, 누구도 그 고단한 일을 하려 하지 않았기 때문입니다. 그들의 삶은 끝없는 이동, 험한 자연환경, 냄새나는 양 떼와의 고된 노동, 그리고 공동체로부터 받는 편견과 멸시로 가득했습니다. “필요하지만 환영받지 못하는 존재”로 여겨졌던 사람들, 바로 그들에게 하나님은 인류 역사상 가장 위대한 소식을 맡기셨습니다.

하늘의 영광이 그들의 어둠을 비추었고, 천사들은 두려움에 떨던 그들에게 말했습니다.

“두려워하지 말라.”

오늘날 우리도 불안으로 가득한 시대를 살아가고 있습니다. 전쟁의 소문, 불확실한 미래, 절대적 진리에 대한 혼란이 일상이 되었습니다. 이럴 때일수록 우리는 어떤 것도 우리의 영혼을 확실히 붙들어 줄 수 없다는 사실을 기억해야 합니다. 오직 예수 그리스도만이 참된 확신을 주십니다. 그분은 우리를 아버지께로 인도하시는 길이요, 하나님의 뜻을 증언하시는 진리이시며, 현재와 영원에 이르는 생명이십니다.

그리스도의 탄생을 묵상할 때, 우리는 두 가지로 반응해야 합니다. 첫째, 하나님의 크신 은혜와 자비를 찬양하고, 둘째, 그리스도께서 명하신 대로 이웃을 사랑하는 것입니다. 하나님의 사랑은 깊은 어둠 속에 빛나는 빛과 같아 우리를 부드럽고도 강하게 인도하십니다. 그리스도께서는 세상에 오셨을 뿐 아니라, 우리의 두려움과 슬픔, 외로움과 혼란 속으로 들어오셔서 떨리는 마음을 위로하시는 분입니다.

크리스마스는 다시 한번 두려워하는 영혼에게 속삭입니다.

“두려워하지 말라.”

임마누엘이 오셨습니다. 평화가 임했습니다. 희망이 우리 곁에 있습니다.

tHE HOPE IS HERE

The birth of Jesus Christ stands as the most consequential event in the history of humankind. No other birth has so dramatically altered the direction of the world or transformed so many lives. From despair to hope, from darkness to light, Christ’s coming continues to touch and restore hearts even now. Scripture marks the announcement of His arrival with the angelic proclamation recorded in Luke 2:14: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men.” What a profound word of grace and comfort.

This peace the angels proclaimed is not merely the human notion of peace—an absence of war, conflict, or tension. Rather, it is the very presence of God dwelling among us, a peace no earthly force can remove or threaten. The birth of Christ established a new reality: Emmanuel, “God with us,” stepping into the brokenness of the world to bring lasting peace and eternal hope.

It is remarkable that the first recipients of this glorious announcement were shepherds in the fields. In the time of Jesus, shepherds occupied one of the most marginalized positions in society. They were viewed as a “necessary burden”—needed to care for the sheep, yet often despised for the very work they did. Their lives were marked by hardship: the constant movement in search of pasture and water, exposure to harsh weather, the exhausting labor of tending animals, and the stigma of social prejudice that branded them as unclean, uneducated, and unworthy members of the community.

Yet God chose them – the lowly, the overlooked, the weary, the ones burdened by society’s disdain – to hear the greatest announcement ever made. Heaven’s glory broke into their darkness, and the angels assured them, “Do not be afraid.” To fearful hearts, God’s first word was comfort.

We, too, live in a world gripped by uncertainty. Rumors of war, cultural confusion, moral instability, and growing anxieties about the future have become standard features of our society. In such times, we must remember that no promise, system, or earthly power can give us true assurance. Only Jesus Christ can. He is the Way who leads us to the Father, the Truth who reveals God’s will, and the Life who sustains us now and forever.

As we reflect on the birth of Christ, Christians are called to respond in two ways: to glorify God for His immeasurable grace and mercy, and to love others as Christ has commanded us. The love of God shines like a brilliant light in the midst of deep darkness, guiding us with tenderness and strength. Christ did not merely enter the world—He entered our fears, our sorrows, our loneliness, and our confusion, offering Himself as the answer to every trembling heart.

Once again, Christmas whispers to the terrified soul: “Do not fear.” Emmanuel has come. Peace has arrived. Hope is here.
