혼란의 시대에 필요한 겸손

오늘날 사회의 현상에 대해 많은 의견이 있지만, 한 가지 분명한 사실은 우리가 혼란의 시대를 살아가고 있다는 것입니다. 정치적 분열은 정부의 마비로 드러나고, 빈부격차는 더 이상 추상적인 논쟁이 아니라 뚜렷한 현실이 되었습니다. 국제 관계 또한 짙은 안개처럼 불투명하여 평화로 가는 길을 보기 어렵습니다.

이러한 시대 속에서 그리스도인들에게는 긴급한 질문이 던져집니다. 우리는 무엇을 구하며 기도해야 하는가? 어떻게 영적 순결을 지키며 하나님의 자녀답게 살아갈 수 있는가? 그 해답은 정치적 권력이나 사회적 영향력에서 시작되지 않습니다. 그 답은 마음의 태도, 곧 하나님과 이웃 앞에서 겸손한 자세를 취하는 데 있습니다.

잠언 30장은 혼란의 시대 속에서 우리에게 귀한 지혜를 전해줍니다. “내가 두 가지 일을 주께 구하였사오니 나의 죽기 전에 내게 거절하지 마시옵소서 곧 허탄과 거짓말을 내게서 멀리 하옵시며 나로 가난하게도 마옵시고 부하게도 마옵시고 오직 필요한 양식으로 나를 먹이시옵소서 혹 내가 배불러서 하나님을 모른다 여호와가 누구냐 할까 하오며 혹 내가 가난하여 도적질하고 내 하나님의 이름을 욕되게 할까 두려워함이니이다” (잠언 30:7-9)

이 기도는 두 가지 중요한 진리를 보여 줍니다. 첫째, 사람은 누구나 부패하고 쉽게 시험에 빠질 수 있음을 인정했다는 점입니다. 둘째, 부족함도, 과잉도 아닌 오직 하나님을 영화롭게 하는 삶을 구했다는 점입니다. 그러나 우리 사회는 끊임없이 부와 권력과 명예를 추구하며, 결국 하나님을 잊고 자만에 빠지기 쉽습니다.

심지어 영적 지도자들조차도 이러한 유혹에서 자유롭지 않습니다. 역사는 지도자들의 추락을 통해 우리에게 교훈을 줍니다. 바로 그렇기 때문에 그리스도인들에게 겸손은 선택이 아니라 필수입니다.

그렇다면 그리스도인은 어떻게 겸손히 걸어갈 수 있을까요? 저는 두 가지를 제안하고자 합니다.

첫째, 모든 거짓을 거부해야 합니다. 요한복음 14장 6절에서 예수님은 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “내가 곧 길이요 진리요 생명이니.” 진리는 단순한 사상이나 철학적 개념이 아닙니다. 진리는 인격, 곧 예수 그리스도 안에 있습니다. 그분은 죄 없는 삶을 사셨고, 우리의 죄를 위해 십자가에서 죽으셨으며, 부활하여 영광을 받으셨습니다. 그러므로 그리스도를 따르는 것은 진리 안에 사는 것을 의미합니다. 세상이 거짓과 타협을 정당화할 때에도 우리는 속임수와 부정을 거부하고 진리를 증언해야 합니다. 우리의 말과 행실과 삶의 무게가 진리이신 그리스도를 드러내야 합니다.

둘째, 만족을 배우고 야망보다 하나님의 뜻을 우선해야 합니다. 잠언 30장 8-9절은 부와 가난 모두에 위험이 있음을 경고합니다. 부는 교만을 낳아 하나님을 잊게 하고, 가난은 절망과 수치로 유혹하여 도적질과 원망으로 이끕니다. 그러므로 지혜로운 길은 날마다 공급하시는 하나님을 의지하고 만족하는 것입니다.

그러나 오늘날 심지어 기독교 가정에서도 자녀들에게 세상 사람들과 다름없이 부와 성공을 최고의 목표로 가르칩니다. 그 결과, 정치인이나 지도자들이 integrity(정직성)를 버리고 물질적 이익을 위해 타협하는 모습을 우리는 수없이 봅니다. 예수님은 제자들에게 분명히 말씀하셨습니다. “그런즉 너희는 먼저 그의 나라와 그의 의를 구하라 그리하면 이 모든 것을 너희에게 더하시리라” (마태복음 6:33).

하나님의 나라를 먼저 구한다는 것은 인생을 영원의 관점에서 본다는 뜻입니다. 물질은 잠시지만 하나님의 나라는 영원합니다. 우리의 필요를 아시는 하나님께서 이미 채워 주신다고 약속하셨습니다.

감사절의 계절을 맞으며 우리는 ‘감사’와 ‘겸손’은 떼려야 뗄 수 없는 관계임을 기억해야 합니다. 참된 감사는 모든 좋은 것이 하나님께로부터 왔음을 고백하는 것입니다. 내 뜻이 아니라 하나님의 뜻을 구하며, 거짓된 세상 속에서 그리스도의 진리와 의를 붙드는 것입니다.

혼란의 시대 속에서 그리스도인은 세상의 혼란을 닮아가거나 반영해서는 안 됩니다. 오히려 그리스도의 평화와 겸손을 나타내야 합니다. 거짓을 거부하고 만족을 배우며, 하나님의 나라를 먼저 구하는 삶을 통해 우리는 참된 하나님의 자녀로 남을 수 있습니다. 그렇게 살아갈 때, 우리는 하나님을 영화롭게 할 뿐 아니라 분열과 어둠 속에 빛으로 서게 될 것입니다.

Humility in a Time of Turmoil

There are many opinions concerning the current state of our society, but one fact is undeniable: we are living in a time of turmoil. The government shutdown reflects the depth of partisan division that has fractured our political system. Socioeconomic inequality is no longer an abstract debate but a sobering reality, as the gap between the rich and the poor grows wider with every passing year. International relations, too, are clouded with uncertainty, like a thick smog that blinds nations from seeing a clear and peaceful path forward.

In such a climate, the question for Christians is pressing: What should we seek and pray for? How can we remain faithful children of God while maintaining spiritual purity amid cultural and moral chaos? The answer does not begin with political power or social influence but with the posture of the heart. It lies in cultivating an attitude of humility—humility before God and humility toward our fellow human beings.

The book of Proverbs offers timeless wisdom for troubled times. In Proverbs 30:7–9, the author prays,

“Two things I asked of You,

Do not refuse me before I die:

Keep deception and lies far from me,

Give me neither poverty nor riches;

Feed me with the food that is my portion,

That I not be full and deny You and say, ‘Who is the Lord?’

Or that I not be in want and steal,

And profane the name of my God.”

This prayer reveals two profound truths. First, the author recognized his own corruption and vulnerability to temptation. Second, he desired neither excess nor lack, but only a life that honored God. In contrast, our society often chases after wealth, power, and status, yet these pursuits easily lead us to forget our dependence on the Lord.

Even those entrusted with spiritual leadership are not exempt from temptation. History and recent events remind us that leaders can fall—disgracing themselves, their ministries, and the God they claim to serve. The lure of ambition and compromise is strong. That is why humility is not optional but essential for those who belong to Christ.

How then can Christians walk humbly in such a divided and distracted age? If I may, I suggest two essential practices.

The first is to resist falsehood in all its forms. In John 14:6, Jesus declared, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.” Truth, then, is not simply an abstract concept or a philosophical pursuit. Truth is embodied in the person of Jesus Christ. He lived a sinless life, died on the cross for our redemption, and rose again to the glory of God.

To follow Christ is to live in truth. That means we must refuse to compromise with deception, dishonesty, or corruption, even when the world normalizes such behavior. The Christian calling is not to blend in with cultural lies but to bear witness to the truth of Christ in word and deed. Our speech, our integrity, and our actions must reflect the One who is Truth Himself.

The second practice is to cultivate contentment and prioritize God’s will over personal ambition. Proverbs 30:8–9 warns of the dangers of both riches and poverty. Wealth tempts us to pride, leading us to deny our need for God. Poverty tempts us to despair and dishonor, leading to theft or bitterness. The wise path is contentment—a reliance on God’s daily provision.

Yet, even in Christian families, children are often trained to pursue wealth and power as the ultimate goals of life, no differently than the secular world. The result is seen in leaders—political and otherwise—who compromise their integrity for financial or personal gain. Jesus reminds us of a different priority: “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matthew 6:33).

To seek His kingdom is to see life from an eternal perspective. Material possessions are temporary; God’s kingdom is everlasting. He knows our needs better than we do, and He has promised to provide.

As we enter a season of thanksgiving, let us remember that gratitude and humility are inseparable. To thank God rightly is to acknowledge that every good thing we have is from Him, not from our own efforts alone. It is to seek His will, not our own ambitions. It is to remain faithful to the truth of Christ in a world drowning in lies.

In times of turmoil, Christians must not mirror the chaos of the culture but embody the peace and humility of Christ. By rejecting falsehood, embracing contentment, and seeking God’s kingdom above all else, we can remain faithful children of God. And in doing so, we not only honor our Creator but also shine as lights in a dark and divided world.
