“하나님의 뜻을 찾는다는 것”

인생을 살다 보면 중요한 결정을 내려야 할 때가 옵니다. 이때 세상 사람들은 인간의 지혜로 결정을 하게 되지요. 주변의 사람들에게 조언을 구한 후에 세상적인 지혜로 결정을 내립니다. 하지만 사람의 지혜는 이미 죄로 물들어 있기 때문에 올바른 결정을 내리는 것이 쉽지는 않습니다. 그런 점에서 바른 믿음을 가지고 있는 사람들은 조금 낫다고 할 수 있겠지만 인간의 지혜로 결정을 내릴 위험은 여전히 존재합니다. 따라서 하나님의 뜻을 발견하고 찾는 것은 무엇보다도 중요하다고 할 수 있겠습니다.

하나님의 뜻을 발견한다는 것이 결코 쉬운 일은 아니지만 도움이 되는 몇 가지를 말씀드립니다. 첫 번째 기억해야 하는 것은 하나님의 뜻은 사주팔자처럼 정해져 있는 어떤 길은 아닙니다. 어떤 분들은 하나님이 정해 놓은 길이 있어서, 그것을 발견하고 그리로 가면 인생이 편하고, 그것이 아닌 다른 길을 선택하면 고생할 것이라는 생각으로 하나님의 뜻을 찾아야 한다고 생각한다면 그것은 신앙이기보다는 일종의 운명론에 기초한 미신에 가깝습니다. 또는 결정을 앞두고 미래가 궁금하고 그에 따른 염려가 많아서 하나님의 뜻을 발견하려고 한다면, 이것 역시 사주를 보러 가는 것과 다를 바 없다고 생각합니다.

하나님의 뜻을 발견한다는 것은 그분과의 친밀한 관계 안에서 그분과 동행하는 삶을 의미하는 것입니다. 먼저 하나님의 나라와 의를 구하면서 살겠다는 원칙 안에서 매일매일 하나님과 가깝게 교제하고, 기도로 그분의 뜻을 구하고, 혹시라도 그것이 발견될 때 내 뜻이나 눈앞의 이익을 버리고 그 뜻에 순종하며 사는 것입니다. 그런 마음으로 선택한다면 그 길이 복된 길이 될 것입니다.

그럼에도 불구하고 때로 우리는 둘 중에 하나를 결정해야 할 상황에 닥치는 경우가 생기지요. 그럴 때는 일단은 급하게 결정하는 것을 피해야 합니다. 왜냐하면 보통 처음에는 모든 생각들이 한꺼번에 몰려오기 때문에 그 속에서 하나님의 뜻을 발견해 내는 것은 어렵기 때문입니다. 하나님의 음성은 거의 언제나 처음에 다가왔던 크고 세찬 바람이 지나가고, 그 뒤를 이은 지진도 지나가고, 그 뒤를 이은 강한 불도 지나간 후에 부드럽고 세미한 음성으로 다가오는 것이 보통이기 때문입니다(왕상19:12).

따라서 결정을 앞두고 있을 때는 일의 경중에 따라 앞으로 3일, 혹은 일주일, 혹은 한 달 동안 결정을 하지 않겠다고 마음먹고 ‘그 기간 동안 하나님의 음성에 귀 기울이겠습니다. 제가 하나님의 뜻에 따른 결정을 할 수 있도록 도와주세요.’ 하고 기간을 정해 놓는 것이 중요합니다.

특별히 뭔가 내 마음에 강렬하게 끌림이 오는 것은 하나님의 뜻이 아닐 가능성이 많습니다. 분명한 해결책처럼 보이거나, 이 기회를 놓치면 안 될 것 같다거나 그럴 때 우리는 그 기회를 덥석 물게 되지만, 그것은 보통 나의 조바심을 노린 사탄의 노림수일 가능도 많습니다. 따라서 급할수록 ‘급하게 결정하지 않겠다’라고 마음먹고 하나님의 뜻을 구할 때, 내 조바심이 사라지고, 내 급함이 사라지고 나면 천천히 하나님의 인도가 보이기 시작하는 것이 보통입니다.

하나님은 지금도 우리에게 말씀하시는 분이시고, 우리가 뜻을 물을 때 응답해 주시는 분이십니다. 하나님의 뜻을 찾는 것은 하나님이 그런 분이라는 것을 기억하고 그분과 일상을 함께 할 때 가능하다는 것도 기억하고, 하나님과의 관계를 돈독하게 만들어가는 우리가 되어야 하겠습니다.

WHAT IT MEANS TO FIND GOD’S WILL

When we live our lives, there comes a time when we must make important decisions. At that time, people of the world make decisions with human wisdom. After asking people around them for advice, they make decisions with worldly wisdom. However, since human wisdom is already tainted by sin, it is not easy to make the right decision. In that sense, those who have the right faith may be a little better, but the danger of making decisions with human wisdom still exists. Therefore, it can be said that discovering and seeking the will of God is more important than anything else.

Discovering the will of God is by no means an easy task, but I will tell you a few things that can help. The first thing to remember is that the will of God is not a certain path that is fixed like fortune-telling. Some people think that God has a set path, and if you discover it and go that way, life will be easy, but if you choose another way, you will suffer. If someone thinks they must seek the will of God in that way, then that is closer to superstition based on fatalism rather than faith. Or, if one seeks to discover the will of God because they are curious about the future before making a decision and have many anxieties about it, this also is not much different from going to a fortune teller.

Discovering the will of God means living a life of walking with Him in an intimate relationship with Him. It is living daily life closely with God within the principle of seeking first His kingdom and His righteousness, praying to seek His will, and when His will is discovered, giving up my own will or immediate gain and living in obedience to that will. If one chooses with such a heart, that way will be a blessed way.

Nevertheless, sometimes we face situations where we must decide between two things. At such times, it is necessary to avoid making a decision hastily. This is because, usually, at first many thoughts rush in all at once, and it is difficult to discover the will of God in the midst of that. God’s voice almost always comes not in the strong and powerful wind that comes first, nor in the earthquake that follows, nor in the strong fire after that, but in the gentle and quiet voice that follows them (1 Kings 19:12).

Therefore, when facing a decision, it is important to determine not to make a decision for a certain period depending on the importance of the matter—whether for three days, or a week, or a month—and to say, “During that time I will listen to God’s voice. Please help me to make a decision according to Your will.”

Especially, something that strongly attracts my heart is often not the will of God. When it looks like a clear solution, or when it feels like I must not miss this opportunity, then we tend to jump at it, but that is often Satan’s scheme taking advantage of my impatience. Therefore, the more urgent it seems, the more I must resolve not to decide in haste, and when I seek God’s will in that way, when my impatience disappears and my urgency is gone, then slowly God’s guidance begins to be seen.

God is still the One who speaks to us even now, and He is the One who answers when we ask for His will. Finding the will of God is possible when we remember that God is such a One and when we live daily life together with Him. Let us remember this and become people who make our relationship with God stronger.
