“믿음의 확신”이 중요한 이유” 

신앙생활에서 중요한 것 가운데 하나가 ‘구원의 확신’입니다. 내가 구원받은 사실에 대한 확신을 말하는 것으로 우리가 반드시 가지고 있어야 한다고 생명의 삶에서 가르치는 것 가운데 하나입니다. 특별히 연세가 드셔서 구원의 확신이 흔들리거나 또는 믿음 생활 중에 이 확신이 부족하면 안 되기 때문에 다시 재점검하라는 이유도 바로 이 구원의 확신이 중요하기 때문에 그렇고, 없으면 안 되기 때문에 그러는 것입니다.

하지만 구원의 확신이 없는 것이 위험한 만큼 구원의 확신이 있는 것도 위험할 수 있습니다. 즉, ‘나는 무슨 일이 있어도 천국에 갈 수 있다고 자신해!’ 하는 것은 잘못하면 교만일 수 있고, 위험할 수 있습니다. 그런 확신을 가졌던 사람들이 바리새파 사람들이지요.

누가복음서 18장에 나오는 두 사람 중에 세리는 하늘을 우러러볼 염두도 못 내고, 가슴을 치며 “아, 하나님, 이 죄인에게 자비를 베풀어 주십시오”라고 말합니다. 이 사람에게는 구원의 확신이 없었습니다. 그에 비해서 바리새파 사람은 확신에 차서 얘기합니다. ‘전 금식도 하고 십일조도 꼬박꼬박 내고 이 세리와는 다릅니다.’ 하지만 예수님은 의롭다는 인정을 받은 사람은 세리였다고 말씀하십니다. 즉 구원의 확신이 없었던 세리는 구원받았고, 구원의 확신이 분명했던 바리새파 사람은 그 반대였습니다.

그렇다면 무엇이 정답일까요? 구원의 확신은 필요한 것일까요? 아니면 위험한 것일까요? 문제의 답은 구원의 확신이 무엇을 위해 작용하는가에 달려 있는 것 같습니다. 만약 구원의 확신이 하나님의 관계를 돈독하게 하는데 도움이 되고 있다면 그것은 꼭 필요하고 좋은 것입니다. 구원의 확신 때문에 하나님께 감사하고, 구원의 확신 때문에 하나님께 더 다가갈 수 있고, 그래서 기도의 제목을 내고, 응답을 확신하고, 그래서 응답해 주시는 하나님께 더 감사하고 이렇게 구원의 확신이 하나님과의 관계를 점점 더 돈독하게 한다면 그 확신은 좋은 것입니다.

하지만 구원의 확신이 나와 하나님의 관계를 멀게 만든다면 그건 잘못된 확신이고 위험한 확신입니다. 구원의 확신이 있어서 더 이상 내 신앙의 상태가 어떤지 걱정되지도 않고, 구원이 확신이 있어서 더 이상 하나님께 열심을 낼 필요도 느끼지 않고, 내가 하나님의 기준에 못 미칠지도 모른다는 염려가 전혀 생기지 않고, 그래서 더 이상 열심히 하지 않고 열정도 사라지고 없고.. 이렇게 구원의 확신이 나를 하나님으로부터 점점 더 멀어지게 만들고 있다면 이 구원의 확신은 틀린 것입니다.

따라서 우리의 신앙은 이 두 가지가 균형을 취하고 있어야 합니다. 내가 구원받았다는 사실에 늘 감사하고, 물에 빠져도 내가 구조대의 손을 잡고 있어야 한다면 위험하지만 구조대가 내 손을 잡고 있으면 안전한 것처럼, 하나님이 내 손을 붙잡고 계시기에 이 구원은 잃을 수 없는 것이고, 그렇게 하나님이 나를 천국까지 데리고 가실 것이라는 확신은 분명히 가지고 있어야 합니다.

하지만 동시에 늘 나의 부족함으로 인한 건강한 아픔과 두려움을 느껴야 합니다. 내가 하나님의 은혜에 턱없이 부족하다는 것과 나는 하나님의 사랑을 받을 만한 존재가 못 된다는 부족함과 두려움을 끊임없이 느껴야 합니다. 그렇지 않고 그저 내가 구원받았다는 사실로 영적으로 과신하게 되면 우리는 어쩌면 위험한 바리새인들이고 구원에서 멀어진 사람들일지도 모릅니다.

THE NECESSITY AND THE DANGER OF THE ASSURANCE OF SALVATION

One of the most important aspects of the Christian life is the assurance of salvation. This refers to the confidence we have that we are truly saved—a topic emphasized in Living Life as something every believer must have. Especially for those who are older, or for anyone whose assurance becomes shaken during their walk of faith, we strongly encourage participation in the Receiving Jesus Meeting again for reexamination. This is because assurance of salvation is not optional—it is essential.

However, just as a lack of assurance can be dangerous, so can a false or misguided assurance. Saying, “No matter what happens, I’m going to heaven for sure!” can lead to pride and spiritual complacency. That’s the kind of confidence the Pharisees had.

In Luke chapter 18, Jesus tells a story of two men. One is a tax collector who could not even lift his eyes to heaven but beat his chest and said, “God, have mercy on me, a sinner.” He had no assurance of salvation. On the other hand, the Pharisee prayed with great confidence, saying, “I fast regularly and tithe faithfully—I’m not like this tax collector.” But Jesus tells us that it was the tax collector—not the Pharisee—who went home justified before God. In other words, the one who lacked assurance was saved, and the one who was full of confidence was not.

So what’s the right answer? Is assurance of salvation something we need, or is it something dangerous? The answer depends on what that assurance is doing in our lives. If our assurance of salvation helps strengthen our relationship with God—if it leads us to be more thankful, draws us closer to Him, prompts us to bring our requests in prayer and to trust in His answers—then it is good and necessary. If our assurance causes our hearts to overflow with gratitude, leads us to deeper intimacy with God, and motivates us to pursue Him more, then it is a right and healthy assurance.

However, if our assurance drives us away from God, it is a dangerous and misleading kind of assurance. If we become spiritually lazy—no longer concerned about the state of our faith, no longer feeling the need to strive, no longer burdened by the possibility that we may fall short of God’s standard—then that assurance is actually drawing us further from God. If the result of our assurance is a loss of passion and spiritual indifference, then it is a false assurance.

Therefore, our faith must strike a balance between these two extremes. We must continually be thankful for the fact that we are saved. Just as someone being rescued from drowning is not safe if they’re the one holding on, but is safe if the rescuer is holding onto them—we are secure because God is holding onto us. This kind of assurance—that God will not let go and will carry us all the way to heaven—is one we should certainly have.

At the same time, we must also carry a healthy sense of brokenness and fear because of our inadequacy. We must never lose sight of the fact that we are undeserving of God’s grace and that we are not worthy of His love. If we lose that awareness and become spiritually overconfident simply because we believe we are saved, we may find ourselves in the shoes of the Pharisee—confident but far from salvation.
