인간 본성과 하나님의 변함없는 사랑

인간은 본래 참된 의와 사랑을 추구하는 존재로 창조되었지만, 타락한 이후 우리의 본성은 죄로 기울어지게 되었다. 하나님을 떠난 인간은 스스로 의를 세우려 하지만, 그 의는 진정한 의가 아니라 왜곡된 공정성에 불과하다. 우리가 말하는 공정함은 종종 자신의 이익과 욕망을 중심으로 판단된 것이며, 사랑 또한 이기적 욕망에 의해 오염되어 일시적이고 자기중심적인 것이 되고 만다.

우리는 사랑한다고 말하지만, 그 사랑의 실체를 들여다보면 상대방을 진정으로 위하는 마음보다는 자신의 만족과 행복을 추구하는 마음이 앞서 있음을 부인할 수 없다. 인간의 정의와 사랑은 결국 타락한 본성에서 비롯된 것일 뿐, 하나님의 완전하신 정의와 사랑과는 비교할 수 없다.

그래서 나는 하나님의 변함없는 공의와 사랑 앞에 경외심을 느낀다. 하나님의 정의는 인간처럼 상황이나 감정에 따라 변하지 않는다. 그분의 의는 거룩하고 완전하여 어떤 경우에도 왜곡되거나 흔들리지 않는다. 또한, 하나님의 사랑은 영원하며 무조건적이다. 하나님은 아무런 자격 없는 우리를 조건 없이 사랑하신다. 인간의 타락과 배신에도 불구하고 하나님은 변치 않는 사랑으로 우리를 부르시고, 회복시키신다.

어거스틴의 고백록을 읽을 때, 나는 그의 절박한 외침을 들을 수 있다. 자신의 죄악을 솔직히 인정하고 하나님 앞에 나아가는 그의 고백은 시대를 넘어 오늘 우리 모두의 심령을 울린다. 어거스틴은 인간 본성의 깊은 부패를 외면하지 않고 정직하게 바라보았고, 자신의 무능함과 타락을 숨기지 않았다. 그의 고백 속에서 우리는 우리 자신의 모습을 보게 된다. 그리고 우리 또한 어거스틴처럼 고백할 수밖에 없다.

“하나님, 우리에게 자비를 베푸소서!”

우리의 힘으로는 죄악된 본성을 이길 수 없다. 스스로를 구원할 수도, 스스로를 의롭게 할 수도 없다. 오직 하나님의 자비와 은혜만이 우리를 구원할 수 있다. 하나님의 은혜만이 우리의 타락한 본성을 새롭게 하고, 우리의 깨어진 영혼을 치유할 수 있다. 우리는 날마다 하나님께 나아가 그분의 얼굴을 구해야 한다.

“주여, 주의 얼굴을 구하리이다.”(시편 27:8)

인간의 어두운 본성과 하나님의 변함없는 사랑을 대조해 볼 때, 우리는 더욱 깊이 겸손해질 수밖에 없다. 하나님의 사랑은 우리가 상상할 수 없는 깊이와 넓이를 지니고 있다. 이 사랑 앞에서 우리는 교만을 버리고, 오직 하나님의 은혜에 의지하여 살아가야 한다. 그리고 이 은혜에 대한 감사와 감격이 우리의 삶을 새롭게 하고, 하나님께 영광을 돌리는 삶으로 인도할 것이다.

Title: Human Nature and the Unchanging Love of God

Human beings were originally created to seek true righteousness and love. Yet, after the fall, our nature has been corrupted, inclining us more toward sin than toward the goodness for which we were made. Left to ourselves, our sense of righteousness is not true righteousness at all — it is a distorted fairness, shaped by selfish interests and fleeting standards. Likewise, what we call “love” is often nothing more than a self-centered desire for temporary satisfaction and personal comfort.

We claim to love others, but if we look deeper, we find that much of our so-called love is motivated by what we can gain rather than by genuine selflessness. Our standards of justice and our expressions of love, springing from our fallen nature, fall miserably short of the perfect justice and love of God.

This is why I am filled with awe at the unchanging righteousness and love of God. His justice does not waver with emotions, circumstances, or human whims. It is pure, holy, and perfect, established in His own character. His love is not dependent on our worthiness, but is unconditional, eternal, and steadfast.

God loves not because we are lovable, but because He Himself is love. Even when humanity turned its back on Him, He remained faithful, calling the undeserving back to Himself with open arms.

When I read Augustine’s Confessions, I can almost hear the desperate cry of a soul fully aware of its own sinfulness. His honest and raw confession transcends centuries, resonating deeply even today. Augustine did not minimize his sin or excuse his failures; he laid them bare before God and before the world. In his confession, I see not only Augustine’s brokenness but my own — the universal condition of all humanity.

And with him, I too am moved to cry out:

“God, have mercy on us!”

We cannot overcome the weight of our sinful nature by our own strength. We cannot save ourselves or make ourselves righteous. Only the mercy of God can rescue us. Only the grace of God can heal the brokenness deep within our souls.

We must continually seek His face, just as the psalmist declares:

“My heart says of You, ‘Seek His face!’ Your face, Lord, I will seek.” (Psalm 27:8)

When we honestly confront the darkness of human nature and behold the glorious light of God’s steadfast love, we are left with no room for pride. We are humbled to the dust. God’s love reaches depths beyond our imagination, covering sins we could never hope to atone for ourselves. Given such grace, how can we respond with anything less than gratitude, surrender, and worship?

It is this awareness of both our deep sinfulness and God’s greater mercy that transforms the heart. It is this grace that renews our lives and moves us to live for His glory, not our own.

The more we grasp the darkness from which we have been saved, the more we will marvel at the brightness of His redeeming love.
